The Heidi Horten Jewelry Collection
Christie's Geneva: $150+ Million
JAW-DROPPING!!
|
|
The World of Heidi Horten, a spectacular single-owner Jewellery Collection, will be offered by Christie's over a series of auctions in May and November of this year. Value has been estimated at one of the largest ever auctioned topping $150,000,000.
Austrian billionaire Heidi Horten, who passed away suddenly in June of last year 2022, was an avid art and jewelry collector.
Her jewelry collection alone to be auctioned off is said to total over 700 pieces, and is filled with Bulgari, Cartier, Harry Winston, Boivin, and Van Cleef & Arpels, just to name a few.
Important jewels were not uncommon to Horten, who received as a wedding gift, the Wittelsbach Blue diamond, the second largest Fancy Deep Blue diamond in the world. This would later be sold at auction in 2008 and purchased by Laurence Graff, who, with a small amount of re-polishing, renamed the diamond the "Wittelsbach-Graff," and then sold it a few years later.
This will be a jaw-dropping auction catalogue! (Read more below...)

Clash of the Diamonds!
Natural Diamonds vs. Synthetic Diamonds
|
|
Some say that synthetic diamonds will have their own niche - that they are carving out their own category. Others believe that they will take over the natural diamond business.
If you want to compare this to other synthetic gemstones, like ruby, emerald, and sapphire, well then you might be safe to conclude that natural diamonds and synthetic diamonds will get along in the same space, with synthetics taking a back seat to the natural.
However, if you are one to compare synthetic diamonds to cultured pearls, you might be inclined to believe that synthetic diamonds will crush the natural diamond business, leaving the natural diamond business in the dust, only for the very wealthy who can afford it, financially and socially. SSEF Reports New Findings
The good news is that SSEF has adapted their testing protocols and are now able to get more unambiguous, conclusive answers as to whether the stone has been enhanced using low temperature heat treatment.
The lab does want you to know that these new testing procedures do take a bit longer in the lab.
And, even more important than that, if you have sapphires with older reports, you may want to consider having them re-examined. (Read more below)

Clash of the Diamonds!
Natural Diamonds vs. Synthetic Diamonds
|
|
What was once considered impossible is now a reality; Synthetic gem quality diamonds are here, they are affordable, and they are creating quite the stir in the market.
So, no worries?
Like Synthetic Colored Stones
Many in the gem world have compared synthetic diamond to synthetic colored gems, such as synthetic emeralds, rubies, sapphires, opals, etc… The technological advances needed to grow gem crystals were, and still are, applauded. When first created, all of these synthetic gem materials, including diamond, were valued not only for their beauty, but also for their technological breakthroughs. They were all expensive to make!
However, once the technological miracle became a reliable commercial production (generally speaking), their costs decreased (for most, costs dropped dramatically), their affordability increased, and they found their own product lines. It has also been noted that they have made little impact on their natural gemstone counterparts.
But will that same scenario happen between
natural and synthetic diamond?

Low T Heating
In the Swiss Gemmological Institute's newsletter last week (SSEF), new and additional details were shared regarding the identification of low-T (Low Temperature) heating of pink sapphires, rubies, and all other colour varieties of corundum.
What they tell us in this update is that (1) their equipment is better
(2) their results are better
(3) their response time is a bit longer
and (4) because they are getting better and more conclusive results, you might want to think about having your stones re-examined. in other words: It is time for a reassessment of a previous conclusion.
Here are the details ...

that make Colombia a global giant of the green gem
|
NPR radio
Weekend Edition
MUZO, Colombia — Although he has helped transform Colombia's emerald industry, long a source of violence and environmental damage, former U.S. diplomat Charles Burgess admits that he got into the business on a whim.
"I don't have a mining background," he told NPR during a recent tour of the mine he runs near the town of Muzo deep in the Andes Mountains. "I never in my wildest imagination thought I'd be working in any sort of business like this. But it's been fascinating."
