Class of 2026
Marches Into Hudson Catholic History
as Our 59th Graduating Class!
Welcome to the Alumni Journey
| | |
On Saturday, June 6th, 126 members of this year's senior class marched up and then down the center aisle of St. Aedan's Church in Hudson Catholic's annual Commencement ceremony to send its newest graduating class into the ranks of alumni! They swell the ranks to 8,300 Hawk graduates! And, with their thoughts squarely on their futures, immediately so on their chosen course of studies at the collegiate level in August, they rightfully will not be thinking about their obligations to the Hudson Catholic of the future - just yet. But that obligation is real, and they will be brought to think about that in the years ahead. As it should be.
For now, the entire Hudson Catholic community should and does celebrate the accomplishments of these fine young men and women, for they have made us proud for so many reasons while enrolled at McGinley Square, and they stand to make us prouder still with where their Hudson Catholic education will take them in life -- to great achievements, personal successes, and, don't forget, lives of service to others!
Enjoy some photos of their big day.

A Message to the Class of 2022
Congratulations! You have graduated college or university.
As you begin your career, think about how you might be able
to give back to the community that helped shape who you are today.
As a product of Lasallian education,
you know that we lead a life in service to others!

Thank You Shout Out
To Our Hawks & Friends,
Enabling Hudson Catholic to Finish The Year Strong
| | |
In response to our annual year-end appeal, Hawks and Friends responded in a customary generous manner emblematic of how we Hawks continue to support the school we love.
Our initial appeal for $50,000 in the month of June was immediately met by a pledge of $25,000 from an anonymous alumnus, if we, in fact, could raise the other $25,000 by month-end.
That challenge proved to be no trouble at all, as the responses and donations poured in, to the tune of $37,500.
Each year is a challenge to repeat the result of the prior year, as the mix of our support changes. In the past year, we've experienced the loss of outside scholarship organization money in excess of $100,000 that we had been able to count on for years. But it looks like MORE HAWKS, and more generous Hawks, responded to cover the large majority of that unexpected loss. Well done! Please accept the extreme gratitude of all at Hudson Catholic for that response!
This completes another great Academic, Athletic, Social and Financial Year for Hudson Catholic!

Life Changing.....and Transformational
A Note from Chief Advancement Officer, Gary Ferrari '73
| | |
As reported by Larry Furey, Vice Chair of the Board of Directors - Marian Catholic High School and member of the Board of Directors, National Catholic Educational Association, Marquette High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin recently became the incredibly blessed recipient of a historic $100 million joint estate commitment. This represents not only extraordinary news for Marquette High School, but for the future of Catholic education across the country.
"This is believed to be the largest gift ever made to a Catholic high school in the United States, and should remind all of us who care deeply about Catholic schools that sustainability is built through vision, generosity, and planned giving," said Furey.
Robust planned giving programs are essential to the long term viability of any educational institution. Endowments do not happen overnight. Unfortunately, Hudson Catholic does not yet have an Endowment, and its Planned Giving Program, although touted and promoted with consistency, has not yet taken root to the degree that would provide for and assure an adequate Endowment. But we stay focused.
What we do have building, with momentum, is a Major Gift Program that delivers sizable annual revenue that plays an important part in securing and assuring the daily and annual operations of our school. And for those major gifts, defined as $10,000 and above, we express our continued gratitude to those alumni and friends who freely and generously invest in the educational franchise that is Hudson Catholic.
These gifts are life-changing, in that they enable the Hudson Catholic administration and faculty to deliver the impactful education and personal and social development of our students that put them on a path to higher education, career choices, and life paths that they may never have imagined. I know that is true in my personal case.
Endowments are built on one conversation, one relationship, and one legacy commitment at a time. Without planned gifts, it is unlikely that our or any other school will develop the endowments needed to not only survive, but to truly thrive for future generations.
The timing of this historic gift to a Catholic high school could not have come at a more important time. A Wall Street Journal report on May 6th estimated that roughly $110 TRILLION will transfer between generations in the coming decades. Catholic institutions that are intentional about planned giving today will be far better positioned tomorrow.
Congratulations to Marquette High School, their alumni, and the anonymous benefactors whose generosity will impact countless young people for generations to come. Their legacy will be measured not in dollars, but in lives transformed!

What a celebration of milestones for the Class of 2026! On Thursday, June 4th, we celebrated our Baccalaureate Mass in St. Aedan’s Church. Our celebrant was the newly installed Bishop of Hudson County, the Most Reverend Pedro Bismark Chau. Bishop Chau actually reached out to me the next day to complement our Mass and the way in which our graduates participated and conducted themselves during the Mass. Our Salutatorian, Ludelle Marasigan, who is headed to the University of Pittsburgh and its Engineering program in the Fall, delivered a wonderful speech to her class.
Two days later on the morning of June 6th, 126 Hawks became alums as diplomas were conferred during a fabulous ceremony. Five graduates were handed their diplomas by their fathers who, themselves, are Hudson Catholic alumni from the classes of ’82, ’85, ’93 and ’01, showing the generational impact of Hudson Catholic! Valedictorian Olivia Morgan, who is heading to Villanova University in September, delivered an inspiring address in which she focused on the impact the Lasallian ideal of “Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve” had on her class.
In my own address to the Class of 2026, I stated, “This class cares about others. It cares about their well-being and their struggles. For me, that’s more valuable than any Algebra or English lesson they may have learned. This class instinctively does things for the betterment of others. That is what it means to be Lasallian. What it means to be Christian. What it means to be good people. And ultimately, isn’t that the real purpose of attending a Catholic school?”
The Class of 2026 has embraced their Lasallian values. Not only are they prepared to go out and make the world a better place, they are committed.
Thank you to all of those who have supported Hudson Catholic with their time, treasure and talents. You have made an investment in the future. And your investment is already paying dividends.

Student/Partner Alliance
Congratulates 9 Graduating Hawks
| | |
Nine graduating Hawks have, in large part, the Student/Partner Alliance to thank for helping them come this far. Through their high school years, they have received financial assistance each year, along with mentoring support, and have been availed to additional resources and events aimed at readying them to meet the demands of college life. The 'S/PA' is dedicated to the all-around support of the students they select for their support, and Hudson Catholic is deeply grateful to have this added and meaningful support for some of its Hawks. THANK YOU, S/PA!
| | The Student/Partner Aliiance is seeking one female mentor to pair up with a Hudson Catholic female student entering the Class of 2030 this fall. A mentor is a trusted and experienced individual willing to make a four-year commitment to provide coaching and advice to a student attending a college prep school in the northern New Jersey area. Get in touch with Gary Ferrari at gary.ferrari@hudsoncatholic.org to express interest. | | The Hawks' Future Poet Laureate | | |
Emani Capers, a rising Sophomore, has a very busy July ahead of her. Emani will be attending NYC's Poets House Academy Program for two full weeks of workshops, seminars, and mentorship opportunities that prepare young poets for future creative endeavors. Entrance into this program is extremely limited and highly competitive. Emani was not only accepted, but was awarded a full scholarship for the duration of the program.
She will be taught by esteemed poets Wo Chan, Dorothy Lasky, Stephan Ira, and Jason Crawford, and the program is overseen by Marty Skoble, poet-in-residence at St. Ann's School, having 40 years experience teaching poetry.
Emani will have the opportunity to read her poetry at NYC bookstores, performance spaces, and galleries, and participate in the Summer Nights program, a collaboration of poetry and music held on Friday nights in Battery Park.
Oh, and, in September, she moves into the HC-SPU Dual Degree Program!

As always happens in the world of education, the end of the year brings change.
After five years of dedicated service to the English and Theatre Departments, our College Programs, Girls Basketball, and the Student Council, Mrs. Erin Drennan-Eckel has stepped down from her position at Hudson Catholic.
Ms. Ashlee Reina '16, Director of Guidance, will oversee College Programs starting in September. For the summer, if you have questions or concerns about any College Programs, please email BOTH Mrs. Barbi and Mrs. Reina, and one of them wil lgeet back to you.
Mr. Bryant Truong '19, Director of Technologies and on Math Faculty, will be leaving us to pursue a business opportunity. Being an alumnus, Bryant is an original Hawk and has been part of our community since his freshman year of high school.
Mr. Jabir Brinkley, College Counselor, is leaving us after two years, ironically, to move to the college level, at FDU. He has brought in many colleges and universities to our campus college fairs, helping many students find their schools of choice, and prepared our NCAA-bound athletes to comply with their obligations under the regulations for athletes.
Mrs. Larisa Zharova, of Math Faculty, has retired after 17 years at he Hawks Nest. Mrs. Zharova impacted hundreds of young menand women and truly lived the Lasallian ideals of Service.
We thank all those departing for their many years of quality service to Hudson Catholic and its students. Their contributions were broad, numerous and impactful. And we wish them all the very best in their new endeavors, or happinness in retirement.
And, just as we say goodbye to some, we say hello to others.
Mr. Maykel Khilla '06 returns to Hudson Catholic in September as a full-time teacher of xxxx. Welcome home, Maykel!
Mr. Andre Jackson returns to 790 Bergen Avenue as a Physical Education & Helath teacher. Welcome back, Mr. Jackson.
And, Mr. Atiq Ali will be joining our Math Department. Welcome to Hudson Catholic!
| | |
This flashback photo from ten years ago in The Jersey Journal of Ashlee Rivera '16 is a good enough reason to remind us that she has been leading the Guidance Department at Hudson Catholic for a couple years now, and will be taking on an additional role in school this coming year, as Director of College Programs. In what is a bittersweet happening, Ashlee will be replacing Ms. Erin Drennan-Eckel (pictured, right) in that role. Erin will leave behind some outstanding contributions to our school community and Hawk students in academics and the arts, having carried the torch forward with the Dual Degree Program after receiving it from Mr. William Venezia '70 a few years ago. Erin also assisted Ms. Sarah Barbi, our Assistant Principal, in the leadership of the Hawk Drama Society, that has put on some outstanding productions in recent years, and earned many a Hawk scholarship money and stints at the NY Conservatory for the Dramatic Arts.
| | Hawks Will Learn How to Protect the Metro Ports, Bridges and Tunnels | | |
Rising seniors Evan Negron and Melanie Naurang have been accepted into the Port Authority Youth Academy, a week-long program, July 20th - 24th, in which they will complete coursework and experience real-life simulators to gain the experience of a Port Authority Police Officer. And, if they should decide to pursue a career in the 'PAPD', this experience will enable them to bypass the first step in the application process. The intensive week-long program concludes with an academy graduation.
Our Hawks emerged through a very competitive process from among high school students throughout Hudson County, with only a few chosen. The Port appears to enjoy Hudson Catholic very much as, annually, they visit our school and speak with students about the Port. The relationship formed with the Port by Assistant Principal Sarah Barbi has proven beneficial to our Hawks each year.

Congratulations go out to our Head Track Coach Mr. Anthony Campbell, who was named New Jersey Girls Track Coach of the Year by NJ.com and The Star Ledger!
This is a tremendous and incredibly well-deserved honor for a man who, along with his staff, helped lead our Girls to securing a Penn Relays Wheel and winning the Non-Public Group "B" State Championship, both 'firsts' in school history.

Wall of Honor Member Alberto Vasquez '99
Returns Home to Take the Reigns of
Hawk Baseball
| | Former Hawk Baseball great, Wall of Honor member Alberto Vasquez '99, who managed the Hawks to our first State Baseball Title, in 2014, is returning to The Nest as the once and future Hudson Catholic Varsity Baseball Head Coach. Alberto earned All County and All State honors as a Hawk, played collegiately at Rutgers, and professionally in the Minor Leagues and in independent baseball. He previously coached the Hawks from 2011 to 2021. In 2021, Alberto, then a Jersey City Police Sergeant, stepped down from the Head Coach position, citing job and family reasons. | | |
In Softball, two Hawk Girls received First Team County honors: Alexa Lane, as Co-Pitcher of the Year, and Isabella Reyes, as Catcher! Brook Baez and Aivah Matos also received County honors, and Lily Gonzalez and Gianna Oyola received Honorable Mention. The Hawks look to be in good shape for next season, as our top pitcher returns as just a sophomore!
The Boys Volleyball Team had a very good winning season, reaching the semi-finals in both the Hudson County Tournament and North Jersey State Tournament. Reza Mahdlou earned All Group 1 Boys Volleyball Honors.

Look Who Stopped By!
That is Zanai Jones '21, visiting with Mr. Anthony Romano, on her first trip home from a busy world-travel schedule playing professionally for the Harlem Globetrotters! Here she is looking back at her school days photo used in a Hudson Catholic promo by the Office of Advancement that accompanied our "Stay Educated" video (at https://hudsoncatholic.org/1964). Zanai attended Villanova on a basketball scholarship, finishing her undergraduate studies in three years, then went on for a Masters Degree and played another year at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Following that, she signed with the Globetrotters to continue her basketball odyssey. Zanai is our school's all time leading Girls Scorer, with 1,388 points. Welcome home, Zanai!

Just one of many things that unites us as Hawks is that Hudson Catholic alumni spread around the nation and the world are making incredible contributions to their communities, professions, and to Hudson Catholic.

Hudson, or Prep? A chance meeting on the Prep's James F. Keenan Field - the occasion of longtime Football Coach and Athletic Director Rich Hansen's retirement - between Hudson County Sports Hall of Famer Coach Ken Such '80 and the legendary Sir Jack Campion of Hudson Catholic Pioneer Faculty and Hudson Catholic Stage Name. Yes, they split their loyalties among the shining school on the hill at McGinley Square and that downtown school, but Hudson was their first love, and always will be!
| | |
And while Rich Hansen did rise to become a legendary Prep and North Jersey football coach and athletic director, he has always been a Friend of Hudson Catholic. That's because he got his humble beginnings as an assistant coach under our fabled Football Coach Ed Agresta in 1982. Pictured here with Rich Zanetich '77, c., and Ken Such '80, r., who served under Hansen at Prep (see how this works?), is Rich Hansen, l., on the occasion of the downtown celebration of his well-earned retirement. She moved to the Union City School System in 1979 and served in many roles, retiring as the Jose Marti STEM Academy STEM Supervisor. Over the years, Mrs. Makar garnered many prestigious educator awards, too numerous to name here. At Hudson, she served as the Science Department Chairperson, and was on hand to welcome a young Mr. Philip Gazzale to the Science Faculty in 1974! Hall of Famer Mr. Gazzale is readying to begin his 54th year on Faculty here! Words of Wisdom
(In Praise of America 250)

"You can go to live in France, but you cannot become a Frenchman. In the same manner, you cannot become a German, a Turk, or Japanese. But anyone, from any corner of the Earth, can come to live in America and become an American."

We wish to thank the family of Don Monahan '69 who passed away on July 1st for their kindness and generosity in asking for donations to be made in Donny's memory to Hudson Catholic High School. Don loved the school very much that he helped to put on the map. We have received numerous gifts already and wish to express our gratefulness to Don's wife, Suzanne, and the full Monahan family for this selfless gesture.
Here is one of them: "Community Health Connections Foundation, Inc., a not-for-profit organization, is honored to make a donation to Hudson Catholic High School in the name of Donald J. Monahan. This contribution reflects our deep respect for Mr. Monahan and his many years of dedicated service to the Bayonne Visiting Nurse Association and Community Health Connections Foundation. Mr. Monahan was a deeply valued member of our Board of Trustees, known for his unwavering commitment to advance community health and supporting educational excellence. His legacy of service continues to inspire our mission and enrich the communities we serve."
