Our Schools Are Thriving!
Class of 2019 Graduates
Dear Friends of East Side Union High School District,

Another school year is behind us and we are very proud of the many accomplishments that took place this year. For the 7th straight year, our graduation rates have been consistently above 91% for our district defined local cohort (class of 2012-2018), and for the 8th straight year, our drop out rates have decreased and our A-G completion rates have increased. You should all be very proud of these accomplishments!

As a team, our ESUHSD staff members strive to create equitable communities for each and every one of our students and many of our students will be attending college in the Fall. They will be shaping not only their future, but also the future fabric of our society.

I would like to highlight our Spartan East Side Promise pact with San Jose State University (SJSU), an endeavor to pave the pathway to college for our students. I am proud to report that 166 of our students received admission to SJSU under the Promise. Another 1,306 students were admitted to SJSU outside of the Promise.

Overall, we have 502 of our students attending UC, 839 CSU, 243 private universities, 72 out of state universities, and 2,347 attending community colleges. This is a grand total of 4,003 of our students attending college this Fall. Our graduates rock!

Below are a few highlights from the National Student Clearinghouse on College Enrollment Information for ESUHSD Graduates for the Class of 2018 ( November 2018 data/Fall 1st semester). Some of this data is one-to-two years behind, but reflect consistent positive outcomes year-after-year for our students.
  • 78% of 2018 graduates enrolled in college the fall immediately after high school graduation.
  • This number jumps to 81% when looking at our graduate enrollment in college at any time during the first year after high school (Average, Class of 2011 - Class of 2018).
  • 65.4% of 2018 graduates that are English Language Learners enrolled in college the fall immediately after high school graduation (Fall/1st Semester).
  • 73.6% of Economically Disadvantaged students enrolled in college the fall immediately after high school graduation (Fall/1st semester).
  • 88.6% of Asian graduates, 71.6% of African American graduates, 67% of Hispanic graduates, and 74% of White graduates in the class of 2018 enrolled in college the fall immediately after high school graduation.
  • 90% of graduates from the class of 2016 enrolled for a second year of college.

I'm looking forward to another successful school year in 2019-2020 and working with you all to maintain the high level of commitment to graduating our seniors and paving the way to college. Below, listed by school, are the valedictorians and some colleges that our students will be attending in the Fall.

Sincerely,
Chris D. Funk
