9th graders and Families, October 25th, 2023

Reminder: Fall 9th grade postsecondary night!

When: Wednesday, November 8th

5:30-6:30pm

AHS Commons

We will discuss academic and postsecondary planning in 9th grade (what should you be doing and thinking about now), setting yourself up for success and opptions from the beginning, building your student resume: extracurriculars and summer plans, and paying for college: a preview. We will also discuss exciting new opportunities for Career and Technical Education (CTE) at AHS.

A few weeks ago during Advisory, 9th graders completed the History, Interests, Future worksheet. This workksheet will help Elliot and me get to know the 9th graders on a more individual level. The goal is to use the information in our individual academic and postsecondary planning conversations with students later this year.

Registration for Dual/Concurrent Enrollment opens soon!

Interested in taking college classes away from AHS campus next semester at PCC or FLC for college and AHS elective credit? You must act now in order to complete the process in time for next semester.

Please take a look at this email to find out how to make it happen! Feel free to come and talk to me as well.

Wow! It has been a busy month of appplying to college for our seniors! We had over 30 seniors attend our college and cupcakes event last week and more than 50 college applications were submitted for free!

Just a mere 3 years from now, the Class of 2027 will have the opportunity to apply to colleges in Colorado for free (without paying application fees) in October of their Senior year during Colorado Free Application days.

Our goal is to make applying to college as low stress as possible: Elliot and I were on hand to assist students with submitting their applications and Hallie Denman from the FLC admissions office also assisted students with submitting their FLC apps.

October/November resources for 9th-graders from the College Essay Guy:

  • College App & Admissions Timeline: This timeline and set of resources track the college search and application process from 9th through 12th grade.
  • Four-Year Course Planner: Make sure you stay on track for both high school and college requirements by filling out this planner each semester. Review the graduation requirements for each subject area and the different course levels offered. The more selective the college, the more it will want to see you go above and beyond the minimum requirements.
  • Big 5 Personality Assessment: Learn more about your strengths, challenges, and communication and learning styles.
  • If your counseling office uses MaiaLearning, take a look at the self-assessment options and give them a try.
  • If your counseling office uses Scoir, start your YouScience assessment in the app.
  • Build healthy routines: Prioritize sleep, healthy food choices and exercise. Stronger physical health = stronger mental health, increased focus and better decision-making skills.

The Small Town and Rural Students (STARS) College Network is dedicated to working with high schools and access organizations to widen pathways to higher education for rural and small-town students.
