Pruning Tools no Gardener should be without!

Since we are hosting a class this weekend on pruning, we thought it would be prudent to mention our favorite pruning tools. Having the right pruning tool for your tasks will make gardening easier and keep your plants healthier and better looking. Start with a high-quality, well-made cutting tool and keep it sharp and rust-free. Making clean cuts helps to ensure your plants recover quickly and look better than ever. And remember, clean garden tools are a key part of garden sanitation, so it is important to sterilize your tools as frequently as possible to help prevent the spread of disease-causing pathogens!

On to our favorites...

Everything Felco! This brand of pruning tools justifies its added cost with impeccable craftsmanship and precision. All the parts of this pruner can be replaced. Even though there are dozens on the market at a small fraction of the price, you'd be lucky if they lasted an entire season. Felcos are one of those increasingly rare items crafted to last a lifetime.

We carry Felco hand pruners, loppers, replacable parts, sharpeners and accessories.

ARS pruners are da' bomb and here's why... Since 1876, ARS Corporation has been defining the state of the art for pruning tools. The tools are sharp, engineered to hold their edge longer, lightweight, well-balanced, and durable to allow all day use with minimal strain and fatigue! The ladies will particularly love these pruners as they are just the right size for smaller to medium-sized hands without taking away from their strength and durability.

Just a quick reminder...

Bareroot Fruit Trees are here and ready to be put in-ground!

If you plan to get on the fruit tree bandwagon, then take this opportunity to get the best selection and prices of the year.

Below is the list of ALL the varieties we received for 2024.

Please note: We will offer bareroot fruit trees through the month of February after which we will begin potting them up and they will be sold at full retail.

Feel the need, the need to spray Copper Fungicide!

If you already have established stone fruit trees, then February is a great time to spray, especially your peaches, nectarines and pluots. In a perfect world, stone fruits would only be grown in an environment where their leaves could stay dry year round, their roots would live in only the most well drained soil, and no one would dare make a pruning cut to their branches during wet weather. That’s not to say it’s impossible to grow stone fruits successfully in the Pacific Northwest, just that you’ll need to choose the right varieties and be informed about the challenges you may encounter. In the PNW peaches, nectarines and pluots are vulnerable to peach leaf curl. One of the most effective treatments for peach leaf curl is copper fungicide spray. Infections generally occur in late winter just as buds begin to swell, so the most impactful time to spray is while the tree is dormant before those buds begin to swell. Our tree and shrub buyer Mitch Pyles-Goodlove has an easy-to-follow spraying timeline: Halloween, New Years and Valentine's Day. Keep in mind, you will need to apply during dry weather and may need to re-apply after rain. Sharon our plant doctor extraordinaire says, "Always read the directions, understand the directions and follow the directions!"

Late winter color - it's a beautiful thing!

We are starting to fill up our perennial tables slowly but surely with some tried and trues. And even though they are not in full glory, we do have several perennials that are starting to bloom.

We even received some rarer varieties of hellebores like Wedding Party, Honeymoon and Winter Jewels for those collectors out there. Take a virtual stroll through our perennial garden.
