Dear Families,
After careful monitoring of illness trends across our schools, Regina classes and all activities will be canceled on Thursday, February 5 and Friday, February 6 due to an exceptionally high and rapidly increasing rate of illness.
Absenteeism has increased throughout the week. As of today, illness rates were approximately 9 percent in preschool, 11 percent in elementary, and over 40 percent in junior-senior high. Overall PreK-12 there are 248 students absent, which accounts for 23 percent of all students. After consultation with Johnson County Public Health, we have decided to cancel classes to slow transmission, protect the health of students and staff, and allow for a deep cleaning of our facilities. School offices will remain open during this time.
We have also taken immediate steps to reduce exposure today. This afternoon’s elementary prayer service included only grades K–2, allowing students to spread out in the gym, and there was no junior/senior high Mass. All practices and activities are canceled this evening. All practices, and rehearsals are canceled Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Friday and Saturday basketball games will be rescheduled. State Speech will continue as scheduled, as it is an off-campus event with a smaller group and minimal close contact.
Johnson County Public Health guidance emphasizes that students should return only after being fever-free and symptom-free for at least 24 hours without medication. During these two days, we ask families to work in solidarity with the school by avoiding social gatherings and allowing time for rest and recovery.
We recognize the inconvenience this creates for families, particularly those with younger students, and we appreciate your flexibility as we prioritize the health of our school community.
We will look forward to welcoming students back on Monday.
