SHADELANDS WELCOMES
DR. EMAN ELMI, PODIATRIST
|
New to Shadelands, Dr. Eman Elmi is an advance-trained podiatrist and foot and ankle surgeon, in practice since 2014, primarily in Marin, where he was Chief of Podiatry at Marin General Hospital for the past four years.
Dr. Elmi established Diablo Foot & Ankle, a Division of BASS Medical Group, in January 2021, when he moved his practice from the North Bay to his new office at 2637 Shadelands Drive, Suite H, in the BASS building that is also home to BASS Urgent Care. With satellite offices in Antioch and Oakland, Dr. Elmi’s practice and growing family are now firmly rooted in the East Bay.
“We’ve been busy in this community since we moved in,” says Dr. Elmi, who treats pediatric through geriatric foot and ankle issues. “There’s a lot of outdoor activity here—exercising, sports, and recreational play. We're all athletes to some degree, we're just not all in training."
Dr. Elmi's advanced level of training covers everything south of the knee: traumatic injuries, such as sprains and fractures; biomechanical issues, such as flat feet and high arches; and age-related ailments, such as mid-foot arthritis.
"Essentially a podiatrist trained today is trained as an orthopedist who specializes in foot and ankle surgery,” says Dr. Elmi, who is also experienced in reconstructive foot and ankle surgery, limb salvage, minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery, wound care, diabetic care, sports medicine, walking imbalances, infectious and dermatological issues, and 3D digital scanning for orthotic casting to treat foot problems such as plantar fasciitis, bursitis, tendinitis, and foot, ankle, and heel pain.
“We’re like a Swiss army knife in our competencies, helping people get back up on their feet—literally—from any number of ailments so they can keep moving and enjoy a healthy, pain-free life."

ON THE MOVE IN SHADELANDS
|
Gary LaMusga [La-moo-SHAY], owner of The LaMusga Company, has been providing financial planning services for individuals and small to mid-sized businesses for more than 40 years. He is also a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst who works with clients and attorneys through divorce proceedings.
In 2017, Gary moved his office from downtown Walnut Creek to Walnut Creek Executive Park, in Shadelands, managed by The Koll Company. Accessibility to local and regional clients, comfortable office conditions, and lifestyle amenities were factors in his move. He found Shadelands to be the perfect new home.
Looking to downsize in early 2021 and wanting to stay in Shadelands, Gary worked again with The Koll Company.
“This is central for my clients, who benefit from the free parking right outside the front door," says Gary. "We've got nearby shopping centers, restaurants, a post office and shipping services, and best of all, several coffee shops.”
In February, Gary and his staff moved to the other side of the 11-acre Walnut Creek Executive Park campus, into 580 sq. ft. of sunlit office space at 2815 Mitchell Drive, Building 2, Suite 105, and have settled in nicely.

“The Koll Company was great to work with,” says Gary, whose fresh new space includes an outer area for his executive assistant and office manager, and an inner area for his desk and two conference tables. "They even helped me move on a busy Saturday afternoon, making this an easy move-out/move-back-in experience."

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS IN SHADELANDS!
|
Sequoia Surgical Pavilion (SSP) is celebrating its 20th year in Shadelands, a milestone marked by significant advancements in surgical technologies and treatment methods for this highly rated ambulatory surgical center (ASC) that has served tens of thousands of patients, offering a high-quality, convenient, and cost-effective alternative to inpatient hospital care for surgical services.
In 2001, SSP partnered with Muir Orthopaedic Specialists (MOS) to construct the state-of-the-art medical building on what had been an empty lot at 2405 Shadelands Drive, now home to SSP on the second floor—an 18,000-SF licensed, multi-specialty, freestanding outpatient facility—and MOS on the first and third floors.
With a clinical and office staff of nearly 100 employees, SSP has six operating rooms and one procedure room, used primarily for pain management therapies.
"Surgeons are able to utilize the surgery center as an extension of their practice," says SSP Administrator Shea Lansberry, who oversees clinical and business operations, "where they can perform surgery in a safe environment with high quality patient care, in a state-of-the-art operating room with licensed and certified medical personnel to help them perform surgeries and procedures as members of the team."
The surgery center differs from a hospital in many ways, but most notably in its concierge approach to surgery and procedures.
"We’re a same day, outpatient surgery center—patients stay with us for no more than 23 hours," says Shea. "Because patients stay with us for less than a full day, the risks for infection are greatly lowered and our patient outcomes are greatly increased.”
In the early days, with only four operating rooms and one minor surgery room, the surgery center would see 300 cases per month, says SSP Director of Business Operations Gina Varela, who has been with the surgery center since 2002.
"With expanded, hi-tech facilities and advancements in physician training and methodologies, we're now seeing 700 cases per month," with a focus on—but not exclusively—orthopedics and pain management procedures."

Nationwide, SSP is known for the quality of its Total Joint Replacement Program—replacement arthroplasty—which records 35 to 40 full joint replacements per month.
"Total joint replacement used to require full hospitalization for three days,” says Shea.
“Now, in this hi-tech facility, and in the hands of exceptional orthopedists, patients go home within 23 hours after full joint replacements, released after surgery to begin therapy right away, allowing them to get back to activities they enjoy faster and live pain-free."
Happy 20th Anniversary,
Sequoia Surgical Pavilion!

SUMMER FUN ON THE VIBE VOLLEYBALL COURT
|
Vibe Volleyball, located in the Shadelands SportsMall, is holding an extensive summer volleyball program during June and July, offering multiple sessions for advanced and experienced players in multiple age groups; beginning players; and very young players.
"With players from our Vibe club program and winter/spring development clinics participating in this summer program," says Vibe Volleyball founder and coach Kris Keller, "we expect to play excellent volleyball inside our volleyball-only, air-conditioned gymnasium at Shadelands."
In addition, Vibe's summer program includes introduction sessions for girls new to the game ages 9-15, and Vibe's newest program, Vibe's Kids-Court.
Kids-Court was developed to introduce volleyball concepts using fun and modified methods to girls ages 5-8, giving the next generation of players a quality foundation for future play.
Vibe's distinctive programs, year over year success, experienced and multi-cultural coaching staff, and philosophies about sports and sportsmanship have elevated year-round Vibe Volleyball to one of the top clubs in the area.

MAY IS MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH
|
Without a doubt, the pandemic has worsened many existing mental health issues and spawned others. The increased isolation has been difficult for many, especially youth who are missing out on in-person socializing at school and isolated seniors who have gone without visits from family and friends and regular community gatherings.
While 1 in 5 people will experience a mental illness during their lifetime, everyone faces challenges in life that can impact their mental health.
There is good news, however: Recovery is common and help is always available through the Contra Costa Crisis Center, which provides 24-hour access to emotional support and critical resources.
The Contra Costa Crisis Center keeps people alive and safe; helps them through crises; provides or connects them with culturally relevant resources; and works with a network of partners to support mental health equity in Contra Costa County.
