ICAA INFLUENCERS
In this second episode of ICAA Influencers, architect Peter Pennoyer describes the evolution of his architectural studies, which began when he was interested in the International Style when he was a high school student, but quickly changed course after he met Robert A.M. Stern. This newfound fascination with classical architecture brought him to work at Stern's firm, Robert A.M. Stern Architects, and he later founded his own firm Peter Pennoyer Architects and co-authored books on the venerable New York firms of Cross & Cross and Warren & Wetmore. As Peter describes it, classicism is not simply about replicating ancient designs - rather, the movement posits that "history is an ongoing conversation" between the architects across the centuries, who work in harmony to build a city.

ICAA Influencers is a five-part series of interviews with today’s top architects on the topic of legacy and how they were inspired and influenced by past design. Each episode reveals a remarkable variety of design inspirations that shaped one of the leading minds of classical architecture: Patrick Ahearn of Patrick Ahearn Architect, Tom Kligerman of Ike Kligerman Barkley, Peter Pennoyer of Peter Pennoyer Architects, Bobby McAlpine of McAlpine House, and Jim Strickland of Historical Concepts.
REGIONAL CLASSICISM
On Thursday, June 3rd, 2021 the ICAA welcomed Jeffrey E. Klee, the Vice-President and Senior Director of Architecture for the Classical American Homes Preservation Trust (CAHPT) for the Continuing Education course, “Regional Classicism: Cosmopolitan and Local in the Colonial Chesapeake,” which offered an exploration of the distinctive regional idiom of classical architecture that emerged in the colonial Chesapeake, outlining its derivation from English sources and its relationship to local social life.

The ICAA is now pleased to present the full lecture for online viewing.

The Regional Classicism series examines the many regional variants of American classical architecture. Each session looks at a distinctive approach to classical design where the development of a regional idiom is characterized by a variety of local conditions, including the use of particular sources, building materials, craftspersons, construction techniques, and in response to unique contexts and climatic factors. The series aims to inspire the design of new buildings and places that contribute to a region's unique architectural identity.

The ICAA would like to thank our Lead Sponsor for Continuing Education courses, Uberto Construction.
THE SUMMER STUDIO IN CLASSICAL ARCHITECTURE
Student Reflections:
Week Four of the 2021 Summer Studio
in Classical Architecture
The ICAA's four-week immersive Summer Studio in Classical Architecture program, which took place this year from June 14th through July 10th, introduces university students from across the country to skills, knowledge, and resources essential to the practice and appreciation of classical design.

Over the course of the Summer Studio, participants study the ICAA's core curriculum in classical design; take part in on-site studies of architecture, urbanism, and landscapes throughout New York City; participate in a mentorship program with young professionals; and much more, culminating in a design project for a new classical building and the awarding of the ICAA Certificate in Classical Architecture.

Each week of the program, students shared their experiences in the classroom and in the field. In the fourth and final weekly installment, they reflect on what they have taken away from the Summer Studio and how it will impact their lives and careers going forward. In addition, the students' final projects are available to view.

The ICAA expresses gratitude to The Richard H. Driehaus Charitable Lead Trust for its support of the Summer Studio in Classical Architecture and the Driehaus Scholars Program.

Thank you to our sponsors for this year's program, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New York Properties and David M. Schwarz Architects.

CHRISTOPHER H. BROWNE DRAWING TOURS
Savannah, Georgia
September 30 - October 3, 2021

The ICAA’s drawing and study courses are centered around the long tradition of studying architecture in the field through measured, analytical, and perspective drawing in sketchbook. These techniques have been used by practitioners since the renaissance to document precedents for reference in contemporary design.

The 2021 Christopher H. Browne Savannah Drawing Tour provides an opportunity to study, through field drawing, the rich diversity of architecture and unique urbanism of Savannah, Georgia - a living laboratory of design, building, and planning from the 18th century to the present day. Each day is structured around studying representative examples of building types that form the fabric of Savannah, with a focus on their composition, detail, and contribution to the urbanism and landscape of the city.

Each year, the ICAA is also pleased to award four scholarships to drawing tour students or emerging professionals annually in the name of Mr. Browne, a long-time supporter and champion of classicism. Scholarship recipients will receive the moniker “Christopher H. Browne Scholars.”

In addition, the ICAA is pleased to offer two scholarships for the Christopher H. Browne Savannah Drawing Tour through the Dorothy LaPolla-Czarnecki Scholarship, sponsored by John LaPolla and LaPolla Designs. This scholarship is offered in honor of John's late mother Dorothy LaPolla-Czarnecki for her unwavering encouragement and promotion of education. John, his family, and company continue this legacy of support and mentorship of aspiring students and craft persons in education and the arts.

Additional scholarships for the Christopher H. Browne Savannah Drawing Tour are available thanks to the Southeast and Southern California Chapters of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art.

The deadline to apply for all scholarships for the Christopher H. Browne Savannah Drawing Tour is Friday, August 6, 2021.
