Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Projection (EVI-Pro) Lite Tool Webinar

December 9 | 12pm CT
Host: National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL)

Forecasting the best ways to adapt to increased EV charging can be difficult. Planners need to consider when consumers charge, how fast they charge, and where they charge, among other factors.
To support that effort, researchers from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) expanded the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Projection (EVI-Pro) Lite tool with more analytic capabilities.

Previously, the tool was limited to letting users estimate how many chargers and what kind of chargers a city, region, or state may need to support an influx of EVs. In an added online application, those same users can take it a step further to predict how that added EV charging will impact electricity demand, or load shapes, in their area at any given time.
Register for the EVI-Pro Lite webinar and learn more about recent expansions to the EVI-Pro Lite tool in an NREL news story

2021 Fuel Economy Guide Now Available

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have just released the 2021 Fuel Economy Guide. The Guide provides detailed fuel economy estimates for model year 2021 light-duty vehicles, along with estimated annual fuel costs and other information for prospective car buyers.

Enhanced Electronic Access: The 2021 Fuel Economy Guide will be published in electronic format only. You can download the latest Fuel Economy Guide from the FuelEconomy.gov website at
www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/guides.shtml and print copies from the electronic file as needed. The online Guide will be updated periodically to include newly released vehicle models and current fuel cost estimates.
Display Signage: If you would like to help promote the Fuel Economy Guide or FuelEconomy.gov, you can print a sign/poster for display.
The DOE and EPA's FuelEconomy.gov website helps consumers choose the most fuel efficient vehicle that meets their needs. In addition to providing the Fuel Economy Guide, FuelEconomy.gov includes lists of the Top Ten 2021 Fuel Sippers and the 2021 Most Efficient Vehicles by EPA Size Class. The website features updated fuel economy data for new and used passenger vehicles dating back to 1984, allows side-by-side vehicle comparisons, and offers tips to help consumers save money and fuel. The website also includes NHTSA safety ratings, tax incentives, and a variety of tools to help consumers save money and make informed decisions about fuel economy.

Key Findings of DOE's Request for Information in Support of Med and Heavy-Duty Truck R&D

December 15 | 12-3pm CT

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) is announcing a webinar on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 to discuss key findings from its Request for Information (RFI) from industry, academia, research laboratories, government agencies, and other stakeholders on issues related to medium- and heavy-duty freight trucking. The RFI and webinar discussions will help identify gaps and barriers to commercializing new technologies, and help inform DOE’s R&D and competitive funding strategy into the next ten years.

On October 9, 2020, EERE's Vehicle Technologies Office (VTO), Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO), and Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO) released the RFI soliciting input in five categories:

1. Freight Operational Efficiency and Systems
2. Internal Combustion Engine, Powertrain, Fuels and Emissions Control
3. Batteries, Electrification, and Charging of Medium- and Heavy-Duty Trucks
4. Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Trucks
5. Other Important Considerations

Responses to this RFI were due on November 9, 2020.

Webinar: EVs and Transportation Funding

December 16 | 12pm CT

The federal government and the states fund highway construction and maintenance in part through taxes on gasoline and diesel fuel. Over the years, the revenue to pay for the roads has decreased in each state due to increasing labor and material costs through inflation, and the fact that gas taxes have not been indexed to inflation. Now, many states are experiencing a severe shortage in the revenue needed to maintain highways.

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) do not pay any gas tax, but plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) do – and both still use the roads. In the long term, as these vehicles gain market share, they will need to contribute to the maintenance of roadways. However, at present, they account for a minuscule portion of transportation funding shortfalls. Some states have considered increasing EV registration fees, often far in excess of what would be paid in state gas tax by a new gasoline vehicle. Excessive registration fees on BEV and PHEV drivers would hinder the adoption of these clean vehicles and do little to cover the funding shortfall.

Join Plug In America for an exploration of this topic in a webinar on December 16, 2020. The webinar will feature Alan Jenn of the University of California at Davis, discussing recent research on EVs and transportation funding, and Jake Varn of the National Governors Association, who will discuss the NGA white paper Planning For State Transportation Revenue In A Coming Era Of Electric Vehicles.
