Raimondo releases Clean Energy Industry Report, announces 72 percent growth in green jobs

Governor Gina M. Raimondo released the 2018 Rhode Island Clean Energy Industry report this month, which showed that clean energy employment in the Ocean State has grown by a remarkable 72 percent since 2014 and resulted in 6,650 new jobs across the state. The clean energy sector now counts more than 15,800 green jobs in total.
"I'm thrilled that we're creating thousands of exciting jobs in green energy, but we're just getting started," said Governor Raimondo. "This spring, we selected Deepwater Wind to build an offshore wind farm big enough to power half the homes in Rhode Island. This project alone will create over one thousand jobs, with a range from construction to engineering to manufacturing positions. Our work to aggressively pursue alternative energy and position ourselves as a leader in this industry will create thousands more jobs in the years to come."

State announces new initiatives to encourage more solar on new sites
|
The Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources has a new set of initiatives to encourage solar development on brownfields, rooftops and carports.
"Making renewable energy more affordable and accessible has been a top priority of this administration, and today's announcement builds on the progress we have made," said State Energy Commissioner Carol Grant. "There is so much underutilized space – from parking garages, to rooftops, to former industrial complexes. By retrofitting these spaces with new solar panels, we will continue to lower our carbon footprint and meet the growing demand for clean energy for all Rhode Islanders."

Solarize Jamestown reaches Tier 2

As a result of increased participation and interest in solar,
Solarize Jamestown
has officially reached Tier 2, allowing for steeper discounts for residents installing solar.
Residents are invited to attend a
Solar 101 event on Wednesday, August 22, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Jamestown Art Center,
to learn the requirements and the process of installing a rooftop solar system, as well as ask the experts questions pertaining to their unique situation.

Burrillville Green Festival to offer electric vehicle test drives Sept. 8

Have you been thinking about owning an electric car or plug-in hybrid?
On Saturday, September 8, join us at the Town of Burrillville's 12th Annual Green Festival, from 10:00 a.m. to 2 p.m., where you will have the chance to peek under the hood, kick the tires and test drive the newest electric car models.

While you're there, stay for the Green Festival which features activities for the whole family. Children can enjoy face painting, crafts, music and bucket truck rides while adults can learn about various methods of conservation from green vendors that will be participating in the festival. Food trucks will be cooking up a storm and the Burrillville Farmers Market will have fresh, local products for sale.
This event is part of Rhode Island's National Drive Electric Week and is being held in partnership with the Pascoag Utility District and the Town of Burrillville’s Parks and Recreation Department.

Clean Energy Industry Report, we take an in-depth look at one program that is helping to prepare college students to enter the clean energy economy -- the University of Rhode Island's Energy Fellows Program.
The year-long URI Energy Fellows Program trains students who are interested in sustainable energy management, economics and policy careers.

Company profile: Providence Marriott Downtown embarks on $4.2 million energy efficiency project
|
Farouk Rajab, Marriott hotel general manager, recently spoke at the launch of the City of Providence’s
RePowerPVD program, committing to a 20 percent reduction in energy use by 2025. The RePowerPVD program is a voluntary energy challenge designed to help large buildings in the city conserve energy, save money and gain recognition for their leadership to make Providence carbon neutral by 2050.
Marriot is embarking on $4.2 million worth of energy efficiency improvements in 2019 as part of its overall re-imagination of its building.

Rhode Island students recognized for energy achievements
|
Ten schools participated in the National Energy Education Development Project 38th Annual Youth Awards for Energy Achievement. Students and teachers submitted portfolios documenting their energy activities throughout the year, such as organizing their own energy fairs/expos, implementing conservation programs, building model wind turbines, conducting school energy audits, and teaching educational workshops for their communities and peers.
