Beginning today, the list of Clear Openings is posted on the Conference website. This list of churches with clergy vacancies beginning July 1, 2024, is made public to allow interested clergy to apply for these open positions. More information about the process, profiles of clear-opening churches, and an application form are all available on the site.
New Clear Openings Process to Assist
in Appointment-Making
The itinerate system is one of the defining traits of The United Methodist Church. The appointment of pastors to congregations and communities within that system is sacred work. Each year, Bishop Easterling, in consultation with the district superintendents, clergy and local churches, appoints pastors in the Baltimore-Washington Conference. The new appointments typically begin July 1.
To assist in this appointment-making process this year, the Cabinet will now post clear openings as they are identified on the conference website. A clear opening is a church/charge with a pastoral vacancy due to retirement, death, or appointment of the current pastor to another mission field.
Clergy may submit applications for clear openings beginning today. Appointments will be announced on the Conference website once they have been finalized.
An application does not guarantee an appointment to a particular church. Likewise, a pastor who has not applied for a clear opening may be appointed to that congregation/charge. The application is simply another resource to be considered during the prayerful discernment process.
