Greetings!

I hope you enjoy the new Clearinghouse e-newsletter format! One of my goals for 2017 was to make the newsletter easier for you to read on your computer or mobile device. I welcome your comments and suggestions on this format and the information provided.

Programs and Services at the Clearinghouse
The following programs and services are consistently available at the Clearinghouse:
adult education (High School Equivalency Diploma and college preparation classes); employment and training programs for adults, dislocated workers, youth and persons with disabilities; unemployment services; veteran services; mental health and counseling services; domestic violence services; health screenings; insurance sign up clinic; pro bono legal clinic; support groups; and material aid in the form of a food pantry.

Program Announcements
On My Way Pre-K applications are being collected now for grants to eligible children who will be four years old, but not yet five years old on August 1, 2017, and will be attending kindergarten in the 2018-19 school year.  These grants will be good for pre-k programs starting in the fall of 2017. Families living below 127% of the Federal Poverty Level in need of pre-k programs living in Allen, Jackson, Lake, Marion and Vanderburgh counties are encouraged to apply.  Applications must be received by Friday, March 31.  See information for families or information for providers.

A local education provider and workforce development organization are working together to help community residents boost their chances at better careers through free education.

McDowell Education Center in Columbus and the Indiana Department of Workforce Development (DWD) are offering multiple programs to area students.


The Ripley County Community Foundation has been awarded an exclusive Education-Workforce Innovation Network (EWIN) Grant for the implementation of a plan to support career pathways in Information Security.

Gov.-elect Eric Holcomb and legislative leaders, in the first week of the Indiana General Assembly’s 2017 session, threw some cold water on preschool advocates’ goal to spend $50 million a year on expanding the state’s pilot program.

Recently, researchers have been getting more and more interested in the role that mental motivation plays in academic achievement — sometimes conceptualized as "grit" or "growth mindset" or "executive functioning."

Peterson wondered whether writing could be shown to affect student motivation. He created an undergraduate course called Maps of Meaning. In it, students complete a set of writing exercises that combine expressive writing with goal-setting.
