YOUR Clearwater Vice-Mayor

Monthly Newsletter

November 2022

Let Us Be Thankful

Thanksgiving is just around the corner. What a joy it is to have a holiday dedicated to preparing and sharing a meal with friends and family as well as intentionally taking time to reflect on that which we are grateful for, whether tangible or intangible. Favorite intangibles certainly include the beauty of nature, health and most importantly, the love and support of those we share our lives with. With gratitude, people acknowledge the goodness in their lives. This gratitude also helps people connect to something larger than themselves as individuals - whether to other people, nature, or a higher power.

As you gather to cook and laugh together, to share memories and make new ones, too, I hope you can take a moment to take a breath - to look around and realize that yes, there is much to be grateful for.

With that in mind, much of my November newsletter is dedicated to expressions of gratitude. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as your Vice-Mayor in Clearwater and working and volunteering shoulder to shoulder with so many of you in our community. It is truly an honor that I do not take for granted.

The Big Cleanup 2022

On November 12, Clearwater kicked off the Second Annual Clearwater Big Cleanup. The city partnered with Ocean Allies, AMPLIFY Clearwater, Keep Pinellas Beautiful, and Visit St. Pete Clearwater to host more than 50 cleanup sites between Nov. 12 - 19. A sincere thank you to our organizers and the numerous sponsors who helped make this event a success.

And Thank you to all the litter-picker participants! I participated in a Clearwater Beach cleanup as well as the Lake Belleview neighborhood streets cleanup. To learn more about community cleanups, check out Keep Pinellas Beautiful or The Big Cleanup. Volunteer for cleanups on the 2nd Friday of every month January thru October.

Celebrating our Chamber's "Best"

On Nov. 4 Clearwater’s Chamber of Commerce, Amplify Clearwater, hosted its annual business awards event, “Stars Among Us.” I was happy to attend. It was so fun to celebrate those businesses and business leaders who add so much to Clearwater. I got to meet a number of award nominees and winners including Launch Award nominee Christina Holtz and her family (above) who own Bay Paws Pet Resort.

Jasper Klein (above) owns Way2GoRides and was nominated for two awards: Generation AMPED Award and The Don Ewing Emerging Entrepreneur Award, which Jasper won! My friend, Imaani Bilal won for Business Excellence Award 5 employees or fewer. Congratulations to all of the nominees, to the winners and thank you to Amplify for helping our business community with resources and support.  Learn more about the winners and nominees here: Amplify Stars Among Us.

Entrepreneurs Cameron and Ellen Macleish Look at Food from 360 Degrees

According to Feeding Tampa Bay, one million people in the greater Tampa region are struggling to gain access to affordable, nutritious food. Cameron Macleish is the founder and CEO of 360 Eats. This is a non-profit organization based in Safety Harbor that provides sustainable solutions aimed at eliminating waste and promoting continual use of resources. 360 Eats looks at food from all angles; they focus on planting, collecting, cooking, feeding, and composting.

Cameron, along with his mom, Ellen Macleish, Vice-Chariman and Head Chef of 360 Eats, work tirelessly to create healthy meals for our most needy residents. They also offer catering and education.

In October, 360 Eats began once weekly, serving free gourmet-level meals, prepared from donated/discard ready produce to Clearwater residents in three separate locations in Clearwater: MLK Jr. Center; Clear Bay Terrace Apartments; and Pinellas Hope. 360 Eats positively impacts our community in multiple ways. Please check them out; 360 Eats. They could always use more community support. Also, check out their story on WUSF on Thanksgiving Day.

Paint Your Heart Out

Celebrating 30 Years!

On October 22 Clearwater Paint Your Heart Out organization celebrated its 30th year painting homes of Clearwater residents. This year, over 150 volunteers painted 10 homes in about 4 hours. You know that saying… many hands make light work. Well, it might not have been light work, but it was fun! And we were so grateful the weather cooperated.

My team of 21 worked together to paint Mr. and Mrs. Walters’ home. From a faded pumpkin-orange to a sage green, it was quite the transformation. A sincere thank you to all of our sponsors, to our volunteer organizers and board members, our board chair, Samantha Almarez, and an especially heartfelt thank you to our friends and neighbors who picked up a brush or a roller and got the job done. Thank you!

Thank You Community Leaders

I am grateful for community leaders, like Ms. Jai Hinson, Director of Artz 4 Life Academy, who doesn’t hesitate to lend a hand when someone - or some organization - asks for help. This fall, Ms. Hinson came to the rescue of three different organizations in Clearwater who were caught in a bind. Councilmember Lina Teixeira helped plan, as well as participated in, Dunedin’s 16th annual “Wearable Art” fashion show. Lina was working with a local dance group who were slated to perform during the show. However, when there were complications and the troop pulled out, Lina reached out to Ms. Jai to ask if her dancers could fill in “last minute.” Ms. Jai’s Artz 4 Life dancers quickly choreographed a program, practiced with all the models and helped make the show a success.

Ms. Jai also helped out the Paint Your Heart Out organization when the group’s planned after-party location was suddenly unavailable. She opened her doors and grounds for a party of nearly 150 volunteers. And most recently, Ms. Jai was approached by the Pinellas Diaspora Arts Project asking to use her facility for an Afro Futurism Wakanda Family Paint Party. Sure enough, Jai opened her doors and dozens of families were able to gather together to paint, enjoy music and games. Finally, Jai and other leaders in the community collectively rose to the occasion by spear-heading Clearwater’s First Annual Juneteenth Celebration at Buccaneer Field. It really does take a village and continuous collaboration and support to enable these impactful programs to be successful. Just wanted to give a special shout out to Jai Hinson and her generosity with Artz 4 Life Academy and the talented kids that she teaches and inspires.  You can also purchase tickets for her holiday Artz 4 Life Academy Family Blessings Performance, which is not to be missed.

Brightening Lives Through

Love, Dignity, and Detergent

Clearwater is fortunate to have numerous congregations who genuinely give back to our community as a whole. I want to share an update about “Laundry Love” sponsored by Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. Holy Trinity Church has partnered with Laundry Love to brighten the lives of local people in need, through love, dignity, and detergent. Laundry Love washes the clothes and bedding of low/no income families and persons across the US.

In Clearwater, Laundry Love is offered the 1st Wednesday of the month from 4-7 p.m. at Happy Bubbles Laundromat at 412 S. Missouri Ave. in Clearwater. Parishioner Karen Owen (above holding detergent and her helpers, as well as Michael, who appreciates the help) helps organize this event and provides an update on the people who utilize this service. Click here to read Karen’s heartfelt update and learn more about this amazing program. A sincere thank you to all those who donate and volunteer to make Laundry Love a success. It truly impacts the quality of life of many residents in our community.

Clearwater Arts Alliance

Beautifying our Community

As a member of the Clearwater City Council, I have the opportunity and responsibility to serve on a number of boards of non-profits to help influence policy and/or represent the interests of our City and residents. For two years I’ve served on the Clearwater Arts Alliance (CAA) board as a non-voting member representing the City. On Nov. 7 the CAA held an “Evening of Art and Culture.” This event raised funds to help support public art and art-centered events in Clearwater. During the event the CAA debuted a wonderful video highlighting their projects. It should be available on their website soon. The painting to the right was created and submitted for a signal box wrap by local artist, Elizabeth Barenis

THANK YOU Emergency Response Team!

At our council work session on Oct. 31 Jevon Graham, Fire Division Chief of Emergency Management led a presentation, “Hurricane Ian After Action Update.” Clearwater employees from multiple departments, including our Fire, Police, and Parks and Recreation Departments traveled to counties south of us to help in Hurricane Ian recovery. Leaders from those departments listed gave updates on what they saw and how they assisted our neighbors post Ian. The photos offer stark images of destruction, devastation and significant challenges faced by first responders. Dozens of Clearwater staff, as well as hundreds of Clearwater residents pitched in to help our neighbors to the south. I am incredibly proud of our City’s preparation for Ian, and our response post Ian. I offer my heartfelt and sincere appreciation to all those who volunteered to help. I urge you to watch Jevon Graham’s presentation, linked here: Hurricane Ian After Action Update. It is the first item on the agenda.

Thank You for Voting!

I appreciate all the voters who showed up to vote on or before Nov. 8. I am grateful to those organizations, like the League of Women Voters, who promote non-partisan voter education as well as voter registration. I congratulate our newly elected officials, both state and local, and I hope they will consider the voices of not only the constituents who supported them, but those who did not, when they make decisions in the future.

Thank You for Your Interest and Support

One of the reasons I send out a newsletter is to receive feedback from you. However, please be aware that any communication with me related to the newsletter is public record.
