Cleft Lip and Palate Repair

Pediatric Craniofacial Center & Clinic at Nicklaus Children's Hospital

Cleft and craniofacial conditions affect thousands of infants, children, teens and adults in the United States each year. Some are born with congenital anomalies like cleft lip and palate, others with more complex, life-threatening craniofacial conditions. Some are burned; others are injured in accidents and animal attacks or diagnosed with various oral/head/neck and skin diseases.

The Craniofacial Center at Nicklaus Children's Hospital is one of Florida’s leading specialty centers for children with craniofacial disorders offering comprehensive management for infants, children, and young adults with craniofacial disorders.

Meet Jasiah

Kimberly’s journey began at 26 weeks pregnant when she learned her son, Jasiah, had a cleft lip and palate. Amidst the challenges, she met Dr. Jordan Steinberg, pediatric plastic and craniofacial surgeon at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. Dr. Steinberg’s team-based care approach ensured Jasiah received specialized treatment from various pediatric specialists.

At eight months, Jasiah had his first surgery to repair his cleft lip, followed by a second for his cleft palate. Today, Jasiah is a thriving, happy child whose smile lights up every room.

His journey is a testament to the extraordinary care from Dr. Steinberg and the Nicklaus Children’s team, and his mother’s unyielding love. Jasiah’s story inspires other families, showing that with comprehensive care and support, children can overcome any obstacle.

Innovating Pediatric Medicine

The only pediatric hospital in Florida offering IUS

Intestinal Ultrasound (IUS)

Intestinal ultrasound (IUS) is a noninvasive ultrasound of the lower gastrointestinal tract that provides highly detailed images of the small intestine and colon. An IUS can show inflammation and other bowel complications associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

The procedure is painless and doesn't require any bowel preparation or sedation like more invasive procedures such as colonoscopies and endoscopies.

An IUS cannot replace endoscopy for diagnosing IBD, but it can replace endoscopic exams that are used to check for the presence of inflammation and monitoring the patient’s disease over time.

Deep brain stimulation is a surgical procedure that involves the placement of small wires (microelectrodes) into the movement center of the brain, through which a steady current of electricity is transmitted to the brain from a pulse generator.

This allows the brain to better control movements.DBS can be used to treat certain brain disorders such as dystonia.
