Clergy (and Almost-Clergy) Update
A Message from Fr. John
I’m pleased to share some joyful staffing news. We’ve been looking for additional clergy support with pastoral care. As it turns out, the answer had been among us for some time – former parishioner the Rev. Rita Kendagor. We had developed a part-time lay position overseeing pastoral-care administration, but I then learned that Mtr. Rita was ready to retire from her secular career as a clinical social worker and open to a part-time clergy role. The stars aligned, and we’re blessed to have her joining our staff. In addition to coordinating pastoral care, Mtr. Rita will share her expertise in contemplative spiritual practice and her training as a certified spiritual director, as well as leading worship, preaching, and providing pastoral care. Following Mtr. Rita’s ordination to the priesthood today (Saturday) at 10 a.m. at St. Andrew’s, she will be with us tomorrow morning, too, presiding at the 10 a.m. service. Then Mtr. Rita will finish up her current social-work job and join St. Andrew’s officially on June 27. The timing is wonderful, given that Mtr. Anne Hutcherson plans to make her summer sojourn to Maine in mid-June.

Let me also share some more information about Jean Long’s responsibilities with us after her ordination to the diaconate (transitionally, on the way to the priesthood) at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 11, at St. Andrew’s. Jean will remain on our staff through the summer in her current role, but she also will be serving a required internship as part of her deacon’s training. So, on Sunday mornings from June 19 through the end of August, Jean will be at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church in Kansas City. Then, in September, Jean will be back with us on Sunday mornings as well as the rest of the week. Jean will continue overseeing the areas of parish life she has led so well: family and youth ministry, young-adult ministry, communications and community connections, engagement, and hospitality. (We’re currently searching for a half-time coordinator of youth and young-adult ministry, so please let me know if you have a lead.)

Adam James, our other recent graduate from Bishop Kemper School for Ministry, has a different timeline for his process toward ordination to the vocational (permanent) diaconate. Like Jean, Adam will be completing a Sunday internship this summer, serving at St. Peter & All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Kansas City, while he remains our worship technology coordinator the rest of the week. Then, God willing, Adam will be ordained as a deacon sometime this fall. His parish assignment will be announced once his ordination date is set.

Finally, we’ve been blessed to have the Rev. John Coil and the Rev. Jerry Kolb serving as assisting clergy. It’s been great to have them with us, and their service will continue as we move forward (though perhaps a bit less frequently than in the past few months). I give thanks to God, and to Fr. John and Fr. Jerry, for their help, especially in this in-between time.

In challenging times, we’re here with worship that’s right for you.
We're open for in-person worship! Worship is also livestreamed and daily prayer is available on Facebook Live at 8 a.m. and 8 p.m

Trailside Summer Kickoff
June 12 at 11:30 a.m.

Join us on Sunday, June 12, for a special summer kickoff following our Trailside worship. We’ll have a couple of food trucks and live music in the HJ’s parking lot, and we hope to continue offering different food trucks after Trailside through the summer. Trailside begins at 11:30 a.m. and ends about 12:15 p.m., so take the opportunity to come and experience it. Not that you should necessarily make it your regular Sunday service, but I’d be very grateful if you’d “try it on” so you can tell people about it – and enjoy a food-truck lunch in the process! – Fr. John
Volunteer Opportunities
Andie's Pantry
June 2 through June 12

Invest two hours every other month toward making friends with our neighbor. Join the 14th Andie’s Pantry* this month. If you are already acquainted with a Banneker family, watch this coming week for your preperatory email. If you are newly considering participating, please contact Dorothy Curry, dorothycurry@kc.rr.com, or Melissa Rock, msrock01@gmail.com, to inquire or to begin your adventure.

Alicia Smith, the social worker/Trauma Sensitive School Clinician at Banneker, calls Andie’s Pantry “a program like no other and a light and a bridge between the church and the school”.

*Andie’s Pantry is part of St. Andrew’s developing partnership with a 350+ family elementary school 3.5 miles to the southeast. Families, selected by the school’s counselor, are met at their grocery store by a St. Andrew’s family and invited to select $150 in needed grocery items. Neighborly relationships deepen while they cherish personally selecting their groceries.

May those whom you cherish have food in plenty, may their children be satisfied and their little ones inherit their wealth. Psalm 17:14
Connecting Community
June 25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Save the date for a partnership between St. James United Methodist and St. Andrew's with volunteer opportunities for Loaves & Fishes, Bettylu's Closet, Loads of Love, Diaper Ministry, and Community Lunch. St. Andrew's is currently responsible for providing laundry detergent (Tide and Gain brands only) and dryer sheets (Bounce or Downey brands only). Stay tuned for more details on how you can get involved in these opportunities.
Sunday Greeters and Birthday Callers

The St. Andrew’s Parish Engagement Commission seeks to invite, welcome, and connect parishioners and guests. We are currently seeking volunteers for a variety of opportunities. We have our Birthday Brigade, where volunteers call parishioners on their birthdays. Additionally, we have a greeter program where volunteers greet attendees in-person or online for St. Andrew’s services. We are also looking for Trailside greeters in person.

If you feel called to serve in any of these areas, or if you’d like to find out more information about the Engagement Commission, please stop and say hi to us in the Jewell Room after service today. Or, if you’re attending service online, please email or call St. Andrews and ask for Sarah Tepikian. Her email address is sarah@standrewkc.org.
Life at St. Andrew's
Stories, Reports, & What's Happening
Welcoming All at PrideFest … With a Little Help from our Friends

Once again, St. Andrew’s will be participating in the Kansas City Pride Parade and Festival the weekend of June 10-12. But this year, we’ll be part of an Episcopal presence there, several Kansas City congregations coming together to walk in the parade and staff a festival booth. Last year, St. Andrew’s parishioners had fun, and several moving conversations, as they represented us at our booth. This year, you can join the experience. If you’re interested in helping with or walking in the parade, which begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 11, contact Heidi Carter at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (hcarter@stpaulskcmo.org). If you’d like to be involved with the Episco-booth at the festival, contact Jean Long (jean@standrewkc.org). Booth shifts are available Friday evening, Saturday afternoon and evening, and Sunday afternoon.
Bridgete Decker - HJ's VISTA

Some of you may have noticed a new face hanging around at HJs during the week. My name is Bridgete Decker (she, her) and I am your new AmeriCorps VISTA. I will be working with members of the St. Andrew's community to develop a pilot project around the issue of homelessness in Kansas City.

I grew up moving around Eastern Kansas and have lived in Kansas City, MO for 17 years now. My partner and I bought a stone house three years ago in rural Kansas and we are working on renovating it for our retirement.

This is my third AmeriCorps position and I am using my education award to get an M.A. degree in Applied Sociology from Emporia State University, my undergraduate Alma Mater.

I am so pleased to have the opportunity to spend time in your community working on such an important and vital issue. I hope to get to know many of you better during my time here.
InJoy Music would like to invite you to join us for our summer sessions! We have musical fun for kids ages 0-5 in our Kindermusik classes, and ukulele classes for children ages 6-11. Music is a great way to beat the heat and learn something new this summer! For more information, visit our web site.
She’s Back … to Stay

Here’s some of the best news I’ve been able to share in a long time. As you know, Mary Sanders has been filling in as part-time assistant to the clergy following her retirement in December. I’m pleased to let you know we’re making the arrangement permanent. Mary is once again our assistant to the clergy, working less than a full-time schedule now but still with us Sundays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. I hope you’ll join me in giving thanks to God and to Mary for a divine solution. – Fr. John
And Now, a Word From Our Mothers

Something that’s changed about church life in recent years is that people now regularly bring coffee or bottles of water with them into worship. Something that hasn’t changed is the need to keep the nave clean. If you bring a drink with you into worship, please take the container out with you when you go. Thanks so much for helping to keep God’s house tidy.
Jesus With You … at Home

If you’re worshiping at home, you can pick up consecrated wafers to use during our celebrations of Holy Eucharist. They’re available in a basket in the narthex, or from the office, anytime the church is open. If getting out is a challenge, we’ll be happy to deliver wafers to you. Just contact Mary Sanders (mary@standrewkc.org; 816-523-1602, ext. 110) about arranging delivery.
Pandemic Precautions

To help us love one another, St. Andrew’s continues our policy of asking everyone older than 2 who enters the church or HJ’s either to be fully vaccinated or to wear a mask. Of course, many people will choose to take both precautions, which is perfectly appropriate. In worship, we invite you receive the Bread and Wine of Holy Communion either at standing stations, with the Wine served in individual cups, or at the altar rail, with the Wine served from a common chalice. At the rail, you may either sip or intinct (dip) the bread. As you greet others for the Peace or after worship, please be aware of their choices to wear or not wear a mask. If they aren’t masked, it’s OK to offer a handshake or a hug, but know they may prefer a bow or an elbow bump instead. If they are masked, assume that a contactless greeting is best.
St. Andrew's is here for you.
Please remember that St. Andrew's is here for you. If you are in need or you are aware of another parishioner in need of assistance, please email Fr. John Spicer, rector. You can also submit a request online or call the church office at 816-523-1602.
Send us your prayer requests through a form on our website, our Facebook page,
or by texting PRAYER to 816-312-5152.

Adult Christian Formation

"We have a policy of not limiting the theological reflection of St. Andrew's members. Groups don't have to get their materials approved by a central authority; in fact, we actively encourage members to start discussion groups that come from different perspectives. The Good Book Club: A Summer in Kings

First and Second Kings together form a single literary work full of history, mystery, and miracle. The authors of Kings chronicle the long and winding journey from King David, through the division of the united kingdom, through the prophetic ministries of Elijah and Elisha, through many kings good and bad, through wars and famines, and finally to the precipice of Babylonian exile. This history is core to who the Israelites are, and how God has guided and provided for them throughout the generations. Each day, you will receive a text or email with a brief summary of the reading, along with a link to that day’s verses. To sign up for the Good Book Club, email Alice Whitson.

For a full list of the readings, including this week's reading, head to our website.
