Cleveland Heights moves toward cleanup of Hillside Dairy |
The city has hired an environmental consultant to assess potential hazards -- namely asbestos -- at the old Hillside Dairy in the potential redevelopment area known as the "Mayfield Triangle."
In awarding the $67,000 contract Monday (Feb. 13), City Council also declared the building -- formerly a police annex and public works storage facility -- “blighted,” meaning that the cleanup work could be funded with federal Community Development Block Grants (CDBG)...

Cleveland Heights coming down the home stretch on the Cedar-Lee-Meadowbrook project |
The city and its developer are “coming down the home stretch” on the Cedar-Lee-Meadowbrook mixed-use development project, with a financial closing date targeted for March.
Current market conditions, construction costs, and overall uncertainty have caused the projected cost to rise from $50 million to over $62 million, prompting a request for the city to issue $14.2 million in economic development tax increment financing (TIF) revenue bonds.
Introduced Monday (Feb. 13) by City Council, a vote on the bond issuance is scheduled for next week...

CH-UH 'State of Our Schools' outlines plan for student success |
...Last year’s theme for the district was “Together We R.I.S.E (an acronym for ‘Reunite, Inspire, Support, Excel’),” Kirby recalled, “as we made our way back to an educational landscape that was forever changed by the pandemic.”
As for the updated vision, “‘Believe’ is our mantra for the 2022-23 school year,” Kirby added. “We know we have to believe in our students, our community, and ourselves to deliver on the promise embedded in our district’s mission” through the “concept of ‘responsible citizenship’ that is really crucial”...

Longtime tenants sign new Coventry PEACE Campus leases |
CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio -- With new 18-month leases signed last week by longtime Coventry PEACE campus tenants, Cleveland Heights-University Heights Libraries can now focus on other ongoing projects -- including an upgrade to the adjacent park and playground.
The library owns the former Coventry school building and the PEACE Park. The leases will provide stability as well for the nonprofit tenants, who had been operating on month-to-month leases since the end of 2021, which affected their ability to apply for grants.
“We are so pleased to be moving forward,” Library Director Nancy Levin stated in a press release...

Cleveland Heights to Begin Conversion
To Hybrid Police Vehicles
| |
At its Committee of the Whole Meeting on Monday, February 13, 2023, Mayor Kahlil Seren and Finance Director Andy Unetic updated City Council on the administration's efforts to begin converting its fleet of police vehicles to hybrid models.
Mayor Seren told Council that despite the challenges municipalities across the country are facing finding these vehicles, Cleveland Heights was able to purchase four low-mileage, fully outfitted used police interceptors.
Director Unetic reported that while new hybrid police models are not available, CHPD Lieutenant Sean Corrigan had located four used vehicles in Georgia.
Director Unetic reported that the mileage on the new vehicles was much better than that of the cars they would replace—24 mpg, as compared to the current 12 mpg. "And our maintenance costs will go way down," he added.
"There are only six low-mileage vehicles fully outfitted police vehicles available in the entire country," Unetic said. "We're getting four of them.
