WE HAVE ICE!

North Rink to Reopen on Monday, January 23

The flooding caused by a frozen sprinkler system pipe in the Community Center on December 26, 2022, disrupted the production of ice on the north rink, which the City was forced to take offline for the last few weeks. The lack of ice on the north rink posed a significant threat to the seasons of the hockey teams that use it and the other athletes and recreational skaters who depend upon it.

The City contracted with CMH Rink Builders, a national expert on ice rinks based in Endwell, New York. CMH's owner, Chad Hrehor, and his team have been working on the rink all week and, on Thursday, were able to successfully bring up ice suitable for skating.

City staff will continue monitoring the ice throughout the weekend, and the north rink will resume its regular schedule beginning this Monday.

The 2023 Celebration of the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Yesterday, Thursday, January 19, the City of Cleveland Heights held the Celebration of the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Cleveland Heights Community Center and recognized 35 students who won this year's Essay, Poetry, and Poster contest.

It was an amazing celebration!

We're still processing the video from last night's event, and we will share all the details in the next City News. But we wanted to share a few photos with you this week as a preview.

Helicopters to Inspect First Energy Power Lines

During the next 5-6 weeks, Chesapeake Bay Helicopters will perform comprehensive visual inspections on all of First Energy’s 138kV lines in the region. Chesapeake Bay has been authorized to patrol the transmission circuits in their entirety, which means their helicopter will follow lines into neighborhood areas, which may include Cleveland Heights.

The helicopter will move slowly along each of the transmission lines, and when it is in our area, residents may see it hovering while inspecting the lines from top to bottom, structure-by-structure, and span-by-span. Storms or outages may prolong these inspections.

The helicopter making the inspections is a black and silver Hughes MD500 with a red tail registration number N774CB.

The Ohio Emergency Management Agency’s “Safe Room Rebate Program” accepting applications beginning January 16, 2023

The Ohio Emergency Management Agency (EMA) will begin accepting applications for the Ohio Safe Room Rebate Program starting January 16. The deadline to apply is February. 20, 2023, at 5:00 pm.

The Ohio Safe Room Rebate Program provides a rebate to homeowners of up to 75% of the cost to install or construct a safe room—up to a maximum of $4,875 to homeowners selected for the program. The rebate program will use a computerized random selection process to select names. Selected applicants will be notified after the random drawing of their position on the priority list.

A safe room is an extreme-wind shelter or space that provides protection to people during a tornado or high-wind event. Safe rooms can be constructed/installed in the basement, beneath a concrete slab-on-grade foundation or garage floor, or in an interior room on the first floor. A safe room may also be buried in the yard or be a stand-alone structure near the home.

For more information on the program’s rules and regulations and to apply, visit Ohio EMA Safe Room Rebate Program. Homeowners with questions should contact Dan Clevidence, Ohio, EMA Mitigation Specialist, at 614-799-3533.
