CIFF at 50 retraces roots to Cedar Lee with events, screenings in April

From Cleveland.com

To help celebrate its 50th anniversary, the Cleveland International Film Festival (CIFF) will return for some screenings in its birthplace at the Cedar Lee Theatre from April 9-18.

Most screenings will be at Playhouse Square, but Cedar Lee will be host for “Members Only” features and the “Film Slam,” programming exclusively for students in grades 5-12, on the mornings of April 13-17.

“We’re excited to be able to mark this major milestone back where we started,” CIFF executive director Hermione Malone told [Cleveland Heights City] council during a feature presentation at the Committee-of-the-Whole meeting.

The event was founded in 1977 by Jon Forman, who still owns the Cedar Lee.

It should also bode well for businesses in the city’s largest commercial district, with [Council VP Gail] Larson and the city already working with Malone and CIFF staff on logistics like parking.

“The district is smack in the middle of a neighborhood, so we want to be cognizant that, not only are there people that live here but there are also other businesses,” Malone said.

‘This city shows up’: Cleveland Heights celebrates Laila Edwards’s historic Olympic gold

From The Guardian

About 75 people packed the Cleveland Heights Community Center on Thursday afternoon to watch the Winter Olympic women’s ice hockey final. They crowded around a big screen with eyes locked on Team USA – and on one of their own, Cleveland Heights native Laila Edwards. For once, the tension in the room wasn’t the familiar Cleveland sports dread. It was the kind that comes with watching a home town kid play for something bigger.

Sherrod Brown: The Pride of Cleveland Heights

I’m so proud of Laila Edwards.

Not only is Laila one of Ohio’s most cherished daughters and one of the best hockey players in the world – she’s also the first Black woman to represent Team USA in hockey at the Olympics.

And on Thursday, thanks in large part to an incredible assist from Laila, the U.S. women’s team brought home the gold medal.

I think everybody in Ohio heard the cheering from Cleveland Heights.

It was an awesome game. But it was also historic.

Jackie Robinson. Billie Jean King. Laila Edwards.

Every generation has athletes who don’t just win games – they remind us that greatness can come from anywhere. They expand what feels possible. They move the country forward.

Laila grew up skating during public skate at the Cleveland Heights Community Center – the same rink where kids still wobble along the boards today.

That ordinary rink helped build an extraordinary athlete.

Cleveland Heights’ slogan is “All Are Welcome.” It’s a community that has worked hard to live up to that promise.

Laila’s success isn’t just about hockey. It’s about what happens when a community decides to invest in its kids and show up for each other.
