Press Release - Ohio State Fire Marshal Continues to Investigate Cause of Cleveland Heights Apartment Fire

The City reposted a February 6 press release from the Ohio State Fire Marshal regarding the continued investigation of the fire at the Cedar Lee Meadowbrook project's Cedar Road-facing building. The State Fire Marshal is working collaboratively with the Cleveland Heights Fire Division and Fire Investigative Unit to manage the investigation and assessment of the site.

Please support your Cedar-Lee businesses!

The City recognizes that the January 24 fire has been felt most keenly by the residents and business community in the Cedar Lee District and has reached out to assure the businesses that the City's Fire Investigation Unit and Building Commissioner are working diligently with the State Fire Marshal to allow both Cedar Road and the Cedar Lee Garage to reopen safely as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, we encourage everyone to visit, shop, dine, enjoy a movie, and support your Cedar-Lee merchants!

We're providing a map of available parking outside the district's parking garage for your reference. We also encourage walking and transit.

The district needs our support more than ever!

Please note that handicap parking is still available on the south end of the surface parking lot located just OUTSIDE of the garage during this time of temporary closure of the Cedar-Lee Parking Garage (due to the fire).

Attorney: 5 of 6 Cleveland Heights restaurant employees detained by ICE released on bond

A bit of background: Cleveland Heights' policy on civil immigration

In 2017, Cleveland Heights City Council strongly objected to President Trump’s Executive Order temporarily banning entry into the United States for migrants from seven Muslim-majority countries and refugees from around the world. Council adopted legislation that affirms Cleveland Heights as a ‘Welcoming City’ and it updated City policy through ordinance (No. 106-2017) to amend Chapter 525, “Law Enforcement and Public Office,” of the Codified Ordinances of Cleveland Heights by enacting a new Section 525.18, “Civil Immigration Enforcement.”

To sum, the ordinance:

  • Requires ICE to supply the City with a judicial warrant prior to detaining an individual
  • Clarifies that the City shall not arrest an individual solely on an immigration detainer
  • Prevents ICE officers from entering City facilities unless pursuant to a court order or legitimate law enforcement purpose
  • If an ICE officer is granted access to a City facility, they must notify individuals that they are speaking with ICE officials (who must be wearing badges and uniforms)
  • City officials shall not inquire into immigration or citizenship status of an individual except where the inquiry relates to a legitimate law enforcement purpose

IN THE COMMUNITY

Mayor Seren was invited to usher in an after-school Diversity Book Club at Roxboro Elementary this week with a reading of the book, 'Differences Matter, Diversity Matters: A Story About My Brother and Me,' written by 11-year-old Justin Blount.

“We have people in the room from all walks of life,” said book club co-organizer Jen Holland. “That’s the makeup of our schools and our country.”

After the book reading, the Mayor spoke with students about the meaning of diversity, and students shared examples from their own lives. He also answered many thoughtful student questions about what the mayor's job entails.

Thanks for organizing this enriching cultural space!
