The Cleveland Heights Police Academy was presented with the STAR award for excellence by Ohio Attorney General, Dave Yost, at a ceremony on Friday attended by Mayor Seren, Police Chief Chris Britton, City Administrator, Danny Williams, Sergeant Matt Lasker, who directs the Academy, and the current class of cadets training at the Academy.

The Cleveland Heights Police Academy, located in a former fire station on Noble Road near Monticello Boulevard, is the 21st academy to receive STAR recognition, a voluntary program of the AG’s Office, which recognizes police academies that meet the following criteria:

  • Eighty-five percent of the cadets eligible to sit for the state certification exam pass.
  • Eighty-five percent of the cadets who attempt the final physical fitness assessment pass at the 50th percentile or better.
  • Cadets receive more than the minimum of 15 cumulative hours of training in high-risk topics such as crisis intervention, building searches, and search and seizure
  • The academy pursues and/or maintains training for cadets on technological devices such as body cameras and drones.

In remarks at the ceremony, Yost said the intent of the STAR program is, “so you don't just pass the test, but you keep the knowledge and the training.”

“I'm pleased to be here today because this is one of our academies that stepped up, met those higher standards,” he added. “You got to this point. You've gotten a better training experience, a stronger education.”

Chief Britton credited Sgt. Lasker, who assumed leadership of the Academy and reinvigorated it after a Pandemic shutdown.

“We were starting fresh, looking at new ideas to re-envision law enforcement training, and I'm certainly proud to have Sergeant Lasker, he's gone above and beyond,” he said. “I want to thank the Mayor, too, who's been supportive in our endeavors. And again, thank you, Attorney General. It's truly, truly an honor for us.”

Mayor Seren shared a message with the cadets while congratulating the Academy for achieving safety and law enforcement training at the highest level.

“Academy is not intended to just prepare you for a test at the end of your training,” he said. “This is intended to prepare you for your first day on the job. This is intended to prepare you to connect with the community. That is something the Academy provides, but it's something that you bring to the table as well.

"One of the mottos that we have here in Cleveland Heights is that the police are the people and the people are the police. We are not separate. We have to work together in order to achieve the goals of public safety. If you're going to be good police, you have to strive to be a good person. Those two things are inextricably linked.”

Cleveland Heights Refuse and Recycling Calendars are Available

Cleveland Heights homeowners were mailed a 2024 Refuse and Recycling Calendar before the New Year. The calendars are filled with helpful information on how to properly recycle and what to do with a multitude of solid waste items. One big change this year is the city’s bulk pickup (see Bulk Collection Changes below). The city has a new, neighborhood-based system for its weekly bulk refuse collection that is indicated in the calendar. We hope you find the new calendars to be helpful and informative weekly, monthly, and throughout the year!

If you are a homeowner or resident whose refuse and recycling are handled by the city and you did not receive a calendar in the mail, it is possible to acquire a copy in person at City Hall.

Upcoming Gas Line Work in Cleveland Heights

Dominion East Ohio has advised the City of Cleveland Heights that on Tuesday, January 2, 2024, a contractor will begin a gas line replacement project on the following streets:

  • Cummings
  • Grosvenor
  • Antisdale
  • Harvey
  • Blanche
  • Powell
  • Janette
  • Thayne
  • South Taylor between Antisdale and Blanche

They expect the project to last for three months, plus time for restoration, depending on the weather. The contractor will provide residences with postcards and door hangers to inform them when work on their streets will occur.

No complete road closures are expected. During the project's first stage, the contractor will install a new gas main and will not disrupt service. During the second stage, however, they will replace the connections from the gas main to the homes along the street and relocate any indoor meters to the outside, which will temporarily disrupt gas service for each home. Dominion has assured us that it will minimize the time homes will be without gas.
