Heights Boys Track Team
Wins Indoor State Championship!

It has been 16 years since Heights High won a state championship in ... anything. But that's exactly what happened on Friday, March 1 when the boys' track and field team traveled to Spire Institute in Geneva for the Indoor Track State Championship.
With only a small group of athletes qualifying to participate, the competition started off slowly when sophomore Henry Perrymond suffered a pulled muscle in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash. When junior Marquise Davis failed to qualify for the final round, it seemed maybe the high hopes of the team would be dashed.
But head coach Scott McNulty made some quick adjustments to his relay teams, replacing Perrymond with Jay’vier Kerr, another 10th grader, for the 4 x 200-meter relay. That team, consisting of Kerr, senior Michael Middleton, sophomore Aiden West, and Davis, pulled off a second place finish to Huber Heights’ Wayne High School.
(Remember that name: Huber Heights’ Wayne High School … we’ll see them again.)

Two Heights youth hockey teams win Suburban Hockey League Championships! | |

Eastside Tigers Youth Hockey brought home two championship banners last weekend! The second-seeded 14U Tigers (pictured, top) defeated number-one seed and division champion Elyria 4-1 to win the Cleveland Suburban Hockey League (CSHL) Bantam A2 playoff championship this past weekend. In the CSHL Squirt A2 playoff championship game, the second-seeded 10U Tigers (pictured second) needed overtime to defeat fourth-seeded Shaker Heights 5-4 to seal the victory.
In the Bantam A2 championship game, Nathan Przybyszewski led all scorers with two goals and an assist, while Zavier Bodak scored two goals, and Gabriel Tangen finished with two assists. Goaltender Clara Roulet faced 35 shots making 34 saves in helping preserve the victory. Other team members include James Aliff, Anders Ebbitt, Dennis Gladkiy, David Heger, Patrick Janor, Jerry Lavelle, Emmett Lehto, Finn Nolan, Harrison Rogers, Sloan Secor, Theo Tekus and James Yan. The Tigers are coached by head coach Brian Przybyszewski, assistant coaches Josh Janor and Jay Tekus, and are managed by Molly Forkins and Brittany Shaffer.
With 04:39 remaining in the third period and the 10U Tigers trailing by one goal, Bryan Janor scored the tying goal off an assist from William Sutter to keep their championship hopes alive. After three periods and the game tied 4-4 the stage was set for sudden death overtime. The Tigers needed only 0:42 of overtime when Gary Yan scored the championship-clinching goal off an assist from Janor, sending the Tiger faithful into a frenzy.
Other goal scorers included Caroline Cox, Nolan Cox, and Dylan Smith, while Molly Sauer and Yan also registered assists. Goaltender Dillon Sauer finished with 12 saves throughout the game. Other team members include Guinevere Ewen and Jack Novak. The Tigers are coached by head coach Mike Sauer, assistant coaches Josh Janor and Anthony Vence, and managed by Kelly Minihan-Sauer.
Congratulations to the Eastside Tigers Youth Hockey program and its 14U and 10U teams on such a great and memorable season!

University of Wisconsin sophomore forward and Cleveland Heights native Laila Edwards is one of 39 athletes invited to participate at the U.S. Women’s National Team Evaluation Camp in Lake Placid, N.Y. Players selected to the final roster will compete in the 2024 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Women’s World Championship to be played in Utica, N.Y. April 3-14.

Cuyahoga County Board of Health conducting a well-child survey in Cleveland Heights | |

The Cuyahoga County Board of Health has launched a survey for families in Cleveland Heights about well-child care visits. Well-child care refers to the regularly scheduled doctors’ visits that your child should have between birth and age 21. These visits could include things like annual physicals, hearing and vision screenings, and developmental and growth milestones. These visits do not include doctor’s visits when children are sick.
They are trying to understand how to help increase the frequency of how often children attend well-child care visits. With the information they receive from this survey, they will be working with community partners to provide tools to help families more regularly visit the doctor in order to help make the lives of children in Cleveland Heights as healthy as possible.

State seizes Taylor Road Synagogue | |

Taylor Road Synagogue, a historic congregation in Cleveland Heights, is trying to remain in its building since the state seized control of the property after its owner, 1970 Taylor Road LLC, failed to pay over $6.4 million in taxes, penalties and interest.
The state seized the property at 1970 S. Taylor Road and presented the order of forfeiture on Dec. 5, 2023, after the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department placed the building up for auction last September.
Raintree Academy sold the building to Taylor Road LCC in 2006 for $4 million. Greater Heights Academy closed in November 2008, when Cuyahoga County ruled it did not conform to not-for-profit status, the CJN previously reported.
The taxes on the documentation provided through Cuyahoga County date back to taxes being unpaid since 2007. The taxes start at $108,693.96 for prior tax year 2007, and continue until 2022, with interest accruing. Of the over $6.4 million in delinquent balance, $6,327,235.75 comes from taxes dating back to 2007. Other delinquent balances include assessments for sewer, street lights, water, and trees, along with interest.
Oheb Zedek-Taylor Road Synagogue, founded in 1904 and once the largest Orthodox synagogue between New York City and Chicago, is appealing the forfeiture in the 8th District Court of Appeals for the state of Ohio in Cuyahoga County to continue holding services in the space.

As one of the best Neapolitan pizzerias in the country, Vero (12421 Cedar Rd., 216-229-8383) in Cleveland Heights has been operating at full capacity pretty much since its inception. On any given evening, the 45-seat restaurant is typically full, with hour-or-more waits for a table not uncommon.
That's why, when the adjacent space became available last fall, owner and pizzaiolo Marc-Aurele Buholzer executed his right of first refusal to take it over. Now, nearly six months later, the work is in the past and the doors are soon to open. It's a stunning and seamless transformation that has added a bar, doubled capacity, and created a bright, open and cohesive space.
In anticipation of future expansion, Buholzer installed a couple years back a 6,000-pound Italian-made wood-burning oven. It cooks pizzas in 60 to 90 seconds compared to the two to three minutes of its predecessor. More importantly, perhaps, the chef has skilled help in the kitchen who can stretch and top dough, upping the speed and efficiency of the operation.

One of Cleveland Heights's more attractive features is its eclectic mix of architectural styles reflected in its houses, apartments, and commercial districts. In 1973, the City’s Landmark Commission was established to help “preserve, protect, and perpetuate” this character.
In 2019, the City pursued a Certified Local Government (“CLG”) designation from the State of Ohio, signaling its commitment to support historic preservation in balance with economic development, resiliency, equity, and property rights.
The CLG designation led, in 2023, to securing an Ohio History Connection grant to update the City’s Landmark Commission Ordinance (Chapter 143 of the Codified Ordinances of the City of Cleveland Heights). The City hired Naylor Wellman LLC, a renowned historic preservation firm, to assist in this update. Naylor Wellman has been working closely with the Landmark Commission since December 2023 to prepare a draft of the updates.
The Landmark Commission and City Department of Planning & Development will hold a community meeting in the Cleveland Heights City Hall Council Chamber on Monday, March 11, 2024, at 6:00 pm to hear about the proposed changes.
Although no formal action will be taken at the meeting, it is the hope that the public will provide input that can be integrated into future legislation that would go before the City Council.

The Climate & Sustainability and Transportation & Mobility Committees Seek New Members | |

Cleveland Heights City Council voted at its January 16, 2024 meeting to split the Transportation and Environmental Sustainability Committee (TESC) into two committees where residents will be selected to meet and discuss a range of subjects related to Transportation and, for the second new committee, Climate and Sustainability.
The Transportation and Mobility Committee (TMC)
The purpose of this Committee shall be to make recommendations to the Mayor and Council on transportation plans for the City, particularly plans that affect and improve transportation by modes that are alternatives to private automobiles; recommendations to assist in implementing the City’s Complete and Green Streets and Vision Zero policies; recommendations for ADA compliance and accessibility for persons with disabilities; and, providing a means for the community to learn about matters related to transportation within the City of Cleveland Heights and the City’s connectivity to nearby regions.
Climate and Environmental Sustainability Committee (CESC)
The purpose of this Committee shall be to advise the Mayor and City Council on recommendations with regard to improving the environmental sustainability of City programs, services, equipment, and facilities; and increasing the awareness of issues of environmental sustainability among the residents and businesses located in the City; and encouraging increase environmentally conscious activities by the residents and businesses located in the City. Shall also serve as an advocate for environmental justice and promote through education and outreach best-use practices for sustainable living, business, and economic development.

Join your friends and neighbors to watch the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse on April 8, 2024, from 1:30–4:00 pm at the Cleveland Heights Community Center!
A solar eclipse—particularly a total eclipse—can be very dangerous to your eyes, so the City of Cleveland Heights has purchased eclipse glasses for the event. Our supplies are limited, though, so every family that registers will receive two pairs, which will be distributed at the event.
The event will feature a magician, a face painter, and activity stations for the kids. Crosby Corn popcorn will be available for purchase.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence. The last total solar eclipse in Ohio was in 1806, and the next one won't happen until 2099. So, this event will go forward regardless of the weather!

Eagles' Kelce tearfully retires after 13 seasons | |

Eagles star center Jason Kelce, one of the key leaders for a team that has made six postseason appearances and two Super Bowl trips over the past seven seasons, announced his retirement in a tear-filled speech Monday, closing the book on a Hall of Fame-worthy career.
"I've been asked many times why did I choose football -- what drew me to the game -- and I never have an answer that gets it right," Kelce, wearing a sleeveless Eagles T-shirt, said during a 45-minute speech that he had to stop many times as he was overtaken by emotion. "The best way I could explain it is what draws you to your favorite song ... your favorite book. It's what it makes you feel. The seriousness of it. The intensity of it.

Travis and Jason Kelce get standing ovation before Cavs game | |
It was a super Tuesday night in Cleveland. First, the Cleveland Cavaliers honored Cleveland Heights native sons Jason and Travis Kelce with a pair of custom bobbleheads.
Then, the Super Bowl champions and All-Pros for the Eagles and the Chiefs made a courtside appearance and received a standing ovation before joining the fans in cheering on the Cavs, who rallied from a 22-point deficit in the fourth quarter to steal a win against the Celtics!

Fern Haught is an author, illustrator, and adjunct professor based in Cleveland Heights, OH. They love crafting stories incorporating queer characters and their relationships, often set in magical worlds.
In their latest book, The Baker and The Bard, Juniper and Hadley have a good thing going in Larkspur, spending their respective days apprenticing at a little bakery and performing at the local inn. But when a stranger makes an unusual order at the bakery, the two friends (and Hadley’s pet snake, Fern) set out on a journey to forage the magical mushrooms needed to make the requested galette pastries.

The topic is "Active Transportation: Living Less Car-Centric in the Heights." How walkable, bikeable, and public transit-friendly do you find the Heights to be? What (if anything) might cause you to walk/roll, bike, or take public transportation more often than you do now?
The data collected will be used to generate a report and also to help create action-oriented small-group discussion questions for the forum on the same topic, which will be coming up at the end of April (details will be available soon).

This important survey is being conducted across the region and will help them build a snapshot of how, when, and why people travel in their daily lives.
Regardless of the amount you travel and whether you travel by car, bus, bicycle, or other means, your input is vital. Information collected will assist decision-makers in determining where to spend transportation dollars to reduce congestion, improve safety, and increase mobility options in your community.

On March 10, 2024, at 3:30 pm, the Western Reserve Chorale will present Brahms’ A German Requiem at Church of the Saviour, 2537 Lee Road in Cleveland Heights. The Requiem is about giving comfort to those who are grieving rather than placing focus on the departed. The score includes prominent roles for guest soprano and baritone soloists Marian Vogel and Brian Keith Johnson, respectively, with chamber ensemble arrangement by Joachim Linckelmann.
The WRC looks forward to presenting this masterwork in its original German. This concert is free, with a free-will donation encouraged to support the WRC’s mission of bringing music to the community.

The City of Cleveland Heights will hold its Earth Day Challenge 2024 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at Forest Hill Park, 2370 Lee Boulevard, Cleveland Heights, Ohio 44118.
We will hold a 5K Running Challenge from 9:00 am to 10:00 am and a 10K Bicycle Challenge from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.
The Bicycle Challenge will be divided into heats beginning every hour or half-hour based on the number of participants.
To Participate
Please submit the Athletic Participant Registration form and your registration fee by Sunday, March 24, 2024, at 11:59 pm—either online, by phone at 216-691-7374, or in person at the Cleveland Heights Community Center, 1 Monticello Boulevard. Two dollars from each registration fee will be donated to the Cleveland Heights Youth Scholarship Fund.
