Mac's Backs Books on Coventry Celebrates its 40th Anniversary

In 1982, Coventry Road changed forever when Suzanne DeGaetano moved her bookshop from Kent State to this iconic Cleveland Heights street. The original location on Coventry was housed above the Dobama Theater, then down the street toward Mayfield Road before settling in the shared storefront with Tommy’s that customers know and love.

Loose Leaf Pick-Up—Week Four

The map below shows upcoming dates for leaf pick-up in different parts of the city.

  • Yellow indicates areas awaiting final pick-up.
  • Green indicates pick-up is underway.

Leaf collection schedule map as of Friday, December 2, 2022

Due to issues with the weather and the number of leaves, leaf pick-up has been extended.

To get the most current leaf collection schedule, please click on the Cleveland Heights Leaf Collection app button.

Use the Cleveland Heights Leaf Collection App

The online app displays a map of the city that is updated daily to show where leaf collection has been completed and when future collections will take place. It also allows you to get the updated collection schedule for your address.

LEAVES WILL BE PICKED UP IN EVERY NEIGHBORHOOD TWICE.

If snow begins to fall during the loose-leaf collection season, it becomes nearly impossible to maintain the collection schedule. Light snow or rain reduces the efficiency of the leaf collection operation. Leaves that are completely covered by snow cannot be collected.

Leaf pick-up is now scheduled through Wednesday, December 14. Weather and time permitting, the Department of Public Works MAY be able to collect leaves a third time, but we strongly advise residents to try to get all of their leaves to their tree lawn by their neighborhood's second pick-up date.

Once the Department of Public Works has completed its loose-leaf collection on December 14, it cannot come out again to collect leaves. After December 14, the equipment for leaf collection will be converted for removing snow and will not be available for leaf collection until Spring 2023.

IMPORTANT LEAF COLLECTION INFORMATION

  • PLEASE DO NOT PLACE LEAVES IN BAGS OF ANY KIND, INCLUDING BROWN KRAFT PAPER BAGS. Instead, please rake or blow your loose leaves ONTO YOUR TREE LAWN.

  • Please do not rake or blow leaves into the street. Putting your leaves in the street creates a safety hazard and can block sewer drains, which may cause flooding

  • It is illegal to burn leaves in the City of Cleveland Heights.

  • If your tree lawn is damaged during leaf collection, please call the Department of Public Works at (216) 691-7300, and the city will repair it in the spring.

Congratulations to Zhug for being Named One of Cleveland Magazine's 25 Best Restaurants!

Cleveland's 25 Best Restaurants

Zhug

These days, I get a lot of requests for restaurant recommendations from friends and family. Lately, no matter what style of food or neighborhood they ask for, they’re all getting the same answer: Go to ZhugDouglas Katz’s exploration of Middle Eastern cuisine just might be Cleveland’s most important dining experience right now. Still, not enough people have cozied up in its pillowed banquette seating, snapchatted envious friends pictures of their sumac-speckled nigella seed and burnt onion hummus ($13) or polished off the Yemenite curry fried chicken ($17) with harissa honey. The small plates menu features an exciting blend of influences from Katz’s travels and his 20-year run at Fire Food & Drink. I know parking is a hassle in Cleveland Heights. I don’t care if you’re picky. Don’t let the no-reservation policy's potential wait scare you. Get to Zhug now. zhugcle.com

Sophie La Gourmande and Heights Arts collaborate

This year's Heights Arts Holiday Shop has overflowed the nonprofit art space at 2175 Lee Road, extending down the block to 2277 Lee Road—home of Sophie La Gourmande.

"I am all about collaboration," said Bob Sferra, Sophie's owner. "This marks our third sort of large collab in the past six years. The energy and mission of Heights Arts has always been a favorite of mine! Plus, Rachel Bernstein and her team are so great to work with."

The art installation at Sophie La Gourmande will be on view through the beginning of the new year, until Jan. 17.
