Congratulations, Cleveland Heights Residents
For being GREAT Recyclers!
| |
In a recent audit of Cleveland Heights' recycling, 82.5% of the material placed in residents' recycling bins was recyclable. This exceeded the city's goal of 80% recyclable materials and helped keep down the city's recycling costs.
Keep up the great work!

Cleveland Heights Hires Carolyn Neal as Community Resource Specialist for Seniors
The City of Cleveland Heights’ Office on Aging welcomes Carolyn Neal as its new Community Resource Specialist.
As Community Resource Specialist, Carolyn will provide some of the services previously provided by social workers, which the Office on Aging no longer employs. She also will ensure senior residents are connected with the resources they need to help them age in place.
Carolyn has traveled and lived worldwide with positions in federal law enforcement and as a librarian and college professor. Her passion, though, has been serving one of the most vulnerable populations: seniors/older adults.
Carolyn has served as a member of the National Council on Aging, the Department of Adult and Senior Services Advisory Board, the American Library Association’s Office of Literacy and Outreach Services Advisory Committee and Advisory Committee on Older Adults, and the White House Conference on Aging.
She has extensive experience educating and training lifelong learners, using emerging technologies and research-based methods to improve information delivery. She believes in creating a well-informed community through personal outreach and technology-based connections.
Carolyn is a proud graduate of what she considers the best-ever HBCU, Clark Atlanta University. Most recently, Carolyn received certifications from Harvard and Yale University in Education and Psychology to further cultivate her commitment to community outreach and engagement. She has presented, published, and advocated for services to seniors for more than 20 years.

Loose Leaf Pick-Up Continues |
The map below shows upcoming dates for leaf pick-up in different parts of the city.
-
Blue indicates areas where the first leaf pick-up has been completed.
-
Green indicates pick-up is underway.
-
The yellow areas have not yet had their first pick-up.
| Leaf collection schedule map as of Friday, November 4, 2022 | |
These dates may change depending on the number of fallen leaves, weather, and other factors.
To get the most current leaf collection schedule, please click on the Cleveland Heights Leaf Collection app button.
The online app displays a map of the city that is updated daily to show where leaf collection has been completed and when future collections will take place. It also allows you to get the updated collection schedule for your address.
LEAVES WILL BE PICKED UP IN EVERY NEIGHBORHOOD TWICE.
If snow begins to fall during the loose-leaf collection season, it becomes nearly impossible to maintain the collection schedule. Light snow or rain reduces the efficiency of the leaf collection operation. Leaves that are completely covered by snow cannot be collected.
Leaf pick-up is scheduled through Friday, December 9. Weather and time permitting, the Department of Public Works MAY be able to collect leaves a third time, but we strongly advise residents to try to get all of their leaves to their tree lawn by their neighborhood's second pick-up date.
Once the Department of Public Works has completed its loose-leaf collection on December 9, it cannot come out again to collect leaves. After December 9, the equipment for leaf collection will be converted for removing snow and will not be available for leaf collection until Spring 2023.
IMPORTANT LEAF COLLECTION INFORMATION
- PLEASE DO NOT PLACE LEAVES IN BAGS OF ANY KIND, INCLUDING BROWN KRAFT PAPER BAGS. Instead, please rake or blow your loose leaves ONTO YOUR TREE LAWN.
-
Please do not rake or blow leaves into the street. Putting your leaves in the street creates a safety hazard and can block sewer drains, which may cause flooding
- It is illegal to burn leaves in the City of Cleveland Heights.
-
If your tree lawn is damaged during leaf collection, please call the Department of Public Works at (216) 691-7300, and the city will repair it in the spring.

FIRE SAFETY
Change Your Clocks, Change Your Batteries
| |
Daylight Saving Time ends this weekend, and we gain that extra hour of sleep. This weekend, you also may hear the familiar fire safety slogan: "Change your clock, change your battery." It's a reminder that when the time changes, you must also change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms.
How important are working smoke alarms in your home?
-
Almost three out of every five home fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. In a high percentage of the homes with no working smoke alarms, the smoke alarms' batteries were either dead, missing, or had been disconnected.
- A working smoke alarm is the number one way to protect yourself and your loved ones.
- No other home fire protection device (fire extinguishers, escape ladders, etc.) even comes close to saving as many lives as smoke detectors.
So, THIS WEEKEND, take a few minutes to do a little "lifesaving" preventative maintenance on your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms.
Here are some simple tips and steps to follow:
| |
CHECK THE EXPIRATION DATE ON YOUR ALARMS.
-
Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms EXPIRE. They only have a lifespan of around ten years.
- Look for date stickers or stamps on your alarms' backs, sides, or inside covers.
-
IF YOUR ALARM IS MORE THAN 10 YEARS OLD OR DOESN'T HAVE AN EXPIRATION DATE, YOU SHOULD REPLACE IT IMMEDIATELY.
| |
|
IF YOU ARE REPLACING YOUR SMOKE ALARMS.
- We STRONGLY RECOMMEND replacing your existing or expired smoke alarms with 10-year Lithium Battery Smoke Alarms with Photoelectric technology.
-
The batteries for 10-year Lithium Battery Smoke Alarms NEVER HAVE TO BE REPLACED. They have sealed battery compartments preventing the battery from being removed.
- You only have to replace the entire smoke alarm at the end of its 10-year life.
- Once a 10-year lithium battery smoke alarm has been triggered, the smoke must be cleared from the unit, or the alarm must be removed from its mounting bracket. The empty mounting bracket serves as a reminder to replace the smoke alarm.
-
The State of Ohio will soon require all homes to install 10-year lithium battery smoke alarms to be up to code. Smoke alarms powered by 9-volt or AA batteries will no longer be sold in Ohio.
IF YOU AREN'T REPLACING YOUR SMOKE ALARMS.
-
REPLACE THE 9-VOLT OR AA BATTERIES IN YOUR SMOKE ALARMS THIS WEEKEND. Please don't assume the alarm's batteries are okay because its low-battery alert isn't beeping. Your life could depend on these batteries. REPLACE THEM NOW.
-
ONLY USE NEW, NAME-BRAND BATTERIES. Don't risk your life and the lives of your family on used, no-name batteries; use those for your remotes and gaming systems.

Throughout the process, we’ll design the space with those who live, work, and play in Coventry. This is a community-led project sponsored by the Coventry Village Special Improvement District.
Join us on November 17th at 6:30 PM at the Coventry Branch of Heights Libraries for a community design session. Click here to RSVP (or stay in touch)!
