AUGUST 2020
Our Named Gift Honorees 2020
Sherene Chen – Sherene revitalized the branch’s focus on AAUW’s mission. She was the force behind our branch becoming one of the first two branches to achieve the five stars in the Five Star Program. Without her leadership and tenacity, our branch would not have been able to navigate and complete the many tasks required to achieve Five Star status. Our branch has been recognized numerous times in national webinars and communications. She has helped our branch hone in on communications and moved the board to a new level of efficiency and focus. In response to requests from other branches seeking Five Star status, she has provided PowerPoints and guidance. She has led the branch with exceptional patience, persistence and good grace.
Sue Torres – Sue is always ready to offer her expertise and help out whenever needed. When Sue first joined, she collected checks for Katherine for monthly events. She also helped with check-in at the events themselves. She has been handling the Middle School awards the last couple of years. She helped with the STEAM days at COM by translating the poster into Spanish, helping to deliver them to the schools and working at the college on the day of. She used her bookkeeping skills to help the treasurer in sorting out the financials and learning how to use Quick Books. She worked at the Holiday Luncheon as a cashier last December and has now taken on the job of Secretary for the Branch.

Jax Harrison – Shortly after Jax joined the branch, she offered her expertise as a PR professional to become our first communications coordinator for our branch. She drafted the branch’s first communications strategy to support the mission and the branch’s goals. Jax increased our branch social media presence by increasing our Facebook followers and getting us on the platforms of Twitter and Instagram. Because of Jax and the communications team that she led, our branch was able to earn one of the five stars in the national Five Star recognition program for web and social media presence. Jax also arranged for NorCal PBS to interview Kim Churches on one of her visits to the Bay Area. She has continued to work on our communications even though she is still marooned in New Zealand because of the coronavirus situation.

Racism and Inequity

If you are looking for resources to help better understand the systemic racism in this country, we will shortly have a list of resources on our own website. But for starters, you might want to take the  American Bar Association (ABA 21-day Racial Equity Habit Building Challenge   A section of the American Bar Association put together this challenge. Can you do it?

Get Out the Vote
GOTV stands for Get Out the Vote. We are hoping to work with Dominican’s GOTV effort once their students are back on campus. Stay tuned for more information about that in early September. Meanwhile, have you checked your own voter registration status? For sure? Best to check now! Everything takes longer these days.  Per order of the governor, all registered voters will be mailed a ballot for the November 2020 election, whether or not they have signed up for an absentee ballot. Because of this new order from the governor, we will all be able to vote by mail in the November 2020 election, but you must be a registered voter to receive that ballot. You can check on your voter status in either of the two links below
If you use the 'status' link you will need your driver’s license or ID card handy if you check this way. You can also call (415) 473-6456 here in Marin and ask them to double check on your registration. Be sure to tell your friends to check their own registration! Every vote counts.

Five Star Program
Marin Branch Featured at Five Star Recognition Event
Sherene Chen and Dottie Burk were panelists along with three officers from a Texas AAUW branch at a Five Star Recognition webinar on July 21 st.
AAUW’s Five-Star National Recognition Program rewards states and branches for aligning their work with the AAUW strategic plan and other initiatives that foster the organization’s mission of advancing gender equity for women and girls. The program began in July 2019 and AAUW Marin was among the first to win the distinction.
Approximately 400 members from across the country tuned in to hear the panelists talk about their experiences with Five Stars (Programs, Advancement, Communications, Public Policy, and Governance and Sustainability).
You can view the webinar.
Women's Suffrage
On August 18, 1920 Tennessee  ratified the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. It was the 36th state to do so securing the right to vote for women. This did not, however, guarantee suffrage for women of color who would have to wait until the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
If you want to learn more about this history watch the PBS series or follow the links below.
PBS The Vote
If you did not catch the American Experience "The Vote" program it is still available through PBS online. This is a four hour history of the fight for suffrage for women. It includes suffergists of different races and addresses the issue of racism in the nation and in the movement itself.

AAUW Hosts Virtual Tech Trek

When AAUW California Tech Trek camps were cancelled this summer, two members of the Tech Trek Committee, Melanie Chancellor and Angela Nuckles , stepped up and created a Virtual Tech Trek for the eight campers selected by our branch to attend the Stanford Camp Curie.
For five mornings, July 5-10, the girls met via Zoom with inspiring women representing a variety of STEM fields. A “camp kit” with materials for the interactive sessions, including a chemistry set purchased by the branch and the Scholarship Fund, was delivered to the girls before the Virtual Tech Trek started.
Speakers and session leaders came from the Buck Center, academia, tech and biotech companies. They covered an impressive number of topics including: strawberry DNA extraction, misconceptions about the brain (neuroscience), research on microscopic worms, the Covid-19 pandemic, cloud computing, app development, sports medicine and concussions, astronomy research, and pharmacognosy (chemistry of plants).
Also contributing to the program was our own Amy Anderson , Tech Trek coordinator, who taught origami and math exercises and even led the girls on a social distance tree identification walk on the last day. Melanie’s daughter Trinity Chancellor , a 2019 Tech Trekker, was also on hand to meet the campers.
Our sincere thanks to all the women who contributed to the pro gram.
Supporting Local Merchants
Every year, our holiday auction raises thousands of dollars due to the generosity of our merchant donors. Many restaurants, entertainment venues, retail shops and personal services providers have been closed and lost much revenue. Elaine Marevich, auction merchant liaison, and Dale Satake, auction chair, are asking you to solicit these businesses as they open for business. Please show our appreciation and help these merchants get back in business. For a list of the merchants, please click on this link on our website ordering or paying, let the merchant know that you are a member of AAUW Marin and want to thank them.
