The topic of how to improve school safety is one that is finding its way into our business more and more nationwide.  In this article we are going to examine why that is and how the Click2Enter-I.V4 system can play a key role in improving school safety in a variety of circumstances.

What is School Safety?

School safety is the process of keeping our children and staff protected from a variety of threats, both internal and external.  Safety is provided through systems such as building codes, sprinkler systems, CO2 detectors, fire alarms, fences, gates, and locked doors.   These systems are typically managed by the internal security organizations of the schools.

What Types of Safety and Security Problems Face Schools Today?

One problem facing our schools today is theft of educational property and equipment.  We recently spoke with the Safety and Security Chief of a major school system about their theft problem.   What they told us was that they felt like they were virtually a distributor of high-tech items such as computers and electronic devices to the local underground market.  For them, this is not only a safety and security problem but also a financial problem.   School systems just can not afford to replace stolen items over and over again considering how tight their budgets have become.

Another typical problem is after-hour fire alarms or burglar alarms.   With schools adopting a stance of installing more locks, fences, and gates, providing access to first responders can be a challenge.  Sometimes there is no one to let them in, or they do not have a key or other means to enter the building or grounds.  This problem can lead to false alarm fines against the school system, which is another potential waste of school resources.

The third problem is perhaps the most important and visible today, and that is the tragic situation where there is an active shooter in a school.  We have all seen the news stories where subjects have been able to gain access to a school and roam freely to commit their heinous acts while first responders struggle to gain access to the building or grounds.  Keep in mind that external doors and entrance-points are typically locked, and in some scenarios the school staff charged with providing access to first responders might be fighting for their own lives, unable to activate door opening systems.

How Can Schools Deal With These Problems and How Can Click2Enter Help?

A common technique to improve school security is to expand the use of fences, gates, and sophisticated door lock systems.  Using these tools can help keep unwanted "visitors" out of the buildings and off school grounds.   A term used to describe this process is "hardening of targets."

However, with the addition of sophisticated lock systems and gates comes the need for a way to open these devices for emergency first responders.  This is where the Click2Enter-I.V4 comes in.

Using the Click2Enter-I.V4 system, external electromechanically operated locks and gates can be opened by emergency first responders and  authorized personnel using their un-modified transceiver radios. These authorized personnel can be school employees and staff as well as outside support agencies and other first responders.

The transceiver radios are the "key" that allows first responders such as the Fire Department, EMT, Sheriff Department or Police Department to gain access to a building in the case of a typical fire or burglar alarm or in an emergency response situation.

By installing C2E units at tactically-chosen entry points, first responders can gain immediate and silent access to the school grounds or building without any help or action from school staff.   This silent and independent control can be especially critical in an active shooter situation when school employees might be incapable of providing access for the emergency first responders.

And, depending on the frequencies chosen by the school system for activation/access,  the Click2Enter-I.V4 system can support a true mutual aid response control allowing multiple agencies to use the same system.

Providing this capability not only helps solve the problem of providing first responder access to school grounds and buildings for routine alarms and inspection, but it also solves the problem of providing first responder access in times of extreme emergency.

The net outcome is a safer, more secure school environment that protects our children and staff.
