Agency founder wins prestigious ad industry honor at 2025 Broderson Awards

Maine Ad+Design (MADE), held its bi-annual Broderson Awards Thursday night June 5th at the University of New England’s Innovation Hall in Portland, where Burgess Founder and CEO Meredith Strang Burgess took home the show’s top honor, the prestigious Joan Dow Award. Named after one of the greatest, most consequential women in the Portland ad industry’s long and rich history, the award is presented every other year to a woman who shares the qualities of Joan Dow—a longtime copywriter, former agency owner and advertising trailblazer in the Portland market.

Joan herself presented the award to Meredith, whom Joan described as a role model and champion for Maine-based businesses. On behalf of the MADE selection committee, she cited Meredith’s history as the leader of one of Portland’s oldest ad agencies and her serial volunteerism, as well as her significant fundraising and other contributions to Maine civic organizations—particularly cancer-based non-profits—for being honored as one of the Outstanding Women in the Maine advertising community.

NECS High-Risk Genetics Campaign earns more local and national honors

Not only did agency founder Meredith Strang Burgess take home the prestigious Joan Dow Award (see related article above) at the recently-held Broderson Awards, but the agency itself won a Gold Award in the Animation Category and a Silver Award in the digital Ad Category, both for the New England Cancer Specialists’ (NECS) High-Risk Genetics campaign.

Agency also earns double Gold Awards in national Healthcare Advertising Awards

Burgess’ NECS campaign also racked up Gold Awards for both Online Display Ad and Integrated Marketing Campaign at the 42nd Annual Healthcare Advertising Awards, a national competition with over 4,300 entries. In total, the campaign has won eight awards in various local, national and international competitions.

Burgess-created branding helps Dielectric raise its stature in radio industry

Fresh off of a very successful appearance at the National Association of Broadcasters show in Las Vegas, Burgess client Dielectric hosted a decidedly more intimate gathering near their Raymond, ME headquarters June 5 and 6, 2025.

Burgess dubbed the event "Radiovana" and created the logo, as well as all the necessary branded invitations and literature to promote the event.

“We got terrific feedback on the name and all the graphics related to the event,” said Kim Savage, VP of Marketing & Business Services for Dielectric. “The look and feel Burgess created helped position us as an elite vendor for the radio industry’s premier buyers.”

Burgess has been working with Dielectric since 2003.

Happy Summer…at last! I hope and trust everyone had a great 4th of July.

This time of year, work tends to slow down but it is also a great time regroup with your marketing team to reassess goals and tactics. There have been many changes on how businesses and organizations are reaching their target audiences. Add in AI and it really is time to stop and make any adjustments in your approach and media vehicles moving forward.

Digital advertising, which is now an important part of most of our clients’ marketing programs, keeps changing and evolving, making it more efficient and effective to reach target audiences. To that end, we are thankful to offer the insights of our own resident digital maven, Leigh Davidson Miller, who helps us stay ahead of the curve with her customized recommendations for the most appropriate digital tactics for every client campaign.

On another subject, I am so proud of our team’s unique community involvement. Last issue, we profiled Charlie Clement’s special volunteer efforts at Maine Medical’s NICU. Now read about our own Dustyn Bailey and his many volunteer activities in our "BAM Off the Clock” feature below.

In the meantime, if you are ready for a marketing and digital tune up, give me a call!

BAM Off The Clock

Dustyn Bailey,

Account Manager

“Giving back” probably doesn’t top the list of priorities for people in their 30’s. But Burgess Account Manager, Dustyn Bailey isn’t your average Millennial. Off the clock, Dustyn has shown himself to be very civic oriented.

Dustyn Giving his Broderson Award Show Speech

In the professional realm, at only age 32, Dustyn is just finishing his second 2-year term as the volunteer President of Maine Ad + Design (MADE), Maine’s premier ad industry professional organization. There, Dustyn is credited with “saving the ad club,” as one presenter put it at the organization’s recent Broderson Awards show. Specifically, he brought back the in-person version of the show, he reinvented the Joan Dow Award and developed the Kevin Fahrman Award, a humanitarian award that honors the legacy of its namesake, and finally, he re-established bi-annual academic awards of $1,000 given to five students in advertising-related disciplines to help pay for educational expenses.

On the community side of life, Dustyn recently began volunteering for Junior Achievement of Maine. In that role, he led a Career Readiness workshop at Scarborough MS on May 19th for students interested in the field of branding and advertising.

That kind of track record is no junior achievement.
