Mass. Legislature Moving Forward With Landmark Climate Bill
Activists needed to urge Governor Baker to sign the Climate Bill without delay

Today, the Massachusetts legislature sent An Act Creating a Next-Generation Roadmap for Massachusetts Climate Policy to the Governor's desk for his signature. This bill will ensure the Commonwealth steadily and permanently reduces its greenhouse gas emissions at the scale and pace that science demands.

After years of advocacy, the bill--while not perfect--is a major step in the ongoing sprint towards ensuring that our communities are protected from the worst effects of climate change, and it provides an important climate toolkit for our state to move forward in significant ways.

The bill:
  • Writes environmental justice into Massachusetts law and provides new tools and protections for effected neighborhoods.

  • Creates a first-time greenhouse gas emissions standard for municipal lighting plants and imposes a five-year moratorium on biomass.

  • Allows for a local option "net-zero stretch energy code" and adds 4 energy efficiency seats to the Board of Building Regulations & Standards.

Help get this bill over the finish line today:
