Climbing over the mountain... Dear Friends, The Election results are in and conservative hearts are broken, disappointed, maybe even angry. As I sat this morning and considered the weight of New Mexico’s future, many questions sprang to my mind. “Lord, what are you doing?” “Is New Mexico too far gone?” “What’s next?” To this, the truth of God’s sovereignty rang in my ears.  “He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings…” Daniel 2:21 In a moment of brokenness for our state, I was reminded that God is still very much involved in the affairs of humans, and he sovereignly does as he wills. Just because I don’t see or even understand what he is doing, doesn’t mean he has somehow lost his sovereignty and power in our lives. Knowing that his sovereignty remains intact and his character remains unchanged I can trust that he is still working us toward what is best for us. The current situation doesn’t seem to be what is best for New Mexico. In fact, it is quite alarmingly dangerous for our future. However, it seems we find ourselves in a situation very similar to Israel during the time of Zechariah, when the path before them seemed impossible and overwhelming. You see, Israel was tasked with rebuilding the temple of God in Jerusalem years after it had been torn down by enemies. As they faced this monumental task, enemy threats tried to thwart their efforts and keep them from completing their God given responsibility. The people saw their enemy and were afraid. Not only was the task itself overwhelming, but now there was opposition from every side and their human eyes could not see beyond it; not until God brought a message of encouragement through Zechariah.  “Not by might, not by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.” Zechariah 4:6

God was offering encouragement to the people and the leaders of the time that with His help, the huge challenge towering before them like a “great mountain”, would become level ground. We are encountering a mountain-sized obstacle right now in our state. And like the Israelites so many years ago, it is easy for us to get focused on the obstacles and the enemies. Dr. David Jeremiah eloquently states that regardless of the obstacles, “Zechariah reminds us that no difficulty or set of circumstances in our lives can ever block the Lord from accomplishing His best for us. He can make Kilimanjaro into a field as flat as Kansas – or else give us the strength and agility to climb right over the mountain and continue on our way. If the obstacles in our lives seem oversized, we need to refocus our eyes on our loving, gracious, powerful God, who is bigger still.” May we refocus our eyes on the Almighty One, and brave the enemy threats as we stand for biblical truth, life, and freedom in the Land of Enchantment.
