A New Year Means New Opportunities
It was just four years ago in December that my wife and I packed up our home in Philadelphia and moved to North Carolina. I had all kinds of ideas about opening a part-time healthcare consulting practice and beginning the glide path into retirement. Yet, I had no way of knowing what really lay ahead. There were a few unexpected health setbacks in our family as we entered the new year, but it looked like a consulting gig was developing for me. Then, lo and behold, the consulting job collapsed and within a few weeks I found out about the opportunity through NCAFCC to help uninsured North Carolinians receive healthcare. It was a new year, a new stage of life and a wonderful new opportunity presented itself.

So, as we enter not only a new year together, but a new decade, I find myself looking forward to what opportunities are just around the corner for NCAFCC and all of you. We have been working hard on some new funding arrangements and our Board has done some important strategic planning for the future, but I’m on the lookout for the unexpected surprise. My guess is that 2020 will be different in some ways, yet much better, than we can even imagine now. Happy New Year! Happy New Decade!
A Message from Your Board Chair
April Cook
Lake Norman Community Health Clinic

As a young teenager in the 70’s, I remember pondering how old I would be and what my life would look like when the year 2000 rolled in. Would I be married and have children; be in a career that I loved and living in a fun progressive city? That might seem a little shallow to some, but I was from Star, NC, a very small town of 800 people. Quite frankly, any town with more than a few thousand seemed progressive to me. So, now it is 2020 and I find myself pondering again what my life will look like in 2050. Will I have made a difference or had a positive impact in the lives of my patients, staff, friends and family? Getting older has certainly changed the way I ponder the future. It is far less about me and more about serving others. Aging can have some positive side effects!

You all inspire me everyday by the great work that you do. Your stories are imprinted on my soul. As we reflect on 2019 and prepare for 2020, I want to share a quote from John R Dallas Jr., “Each year’s regret are envelopes in which messages of hope are found for the new year” as well as a quote from Vern McLellan, “What the new year brings to you will depend a great deal on what you bring to the new year”.

With that being said, your board is working on a new and exciting strategic plan for our association and we can’t wait to share it with you at our Leadership Retreat that will be held on April 30 th through May 1 st. Put it on your calendar. We need you, your expertise, an open mind and your continued willingness to serve and have an impact on those that need it most in our communities!

Happy New Year!

And Away We Go!
Mark Scheerer
Deputy Director

2020 is here and with it comes a change in our calendar of events. This year's Leadership Retreat will be held on April 30-May 1 so be on the lookout for more details. We're making this change for a few reasons with one particular reason foremost in our minds. Last year there was tremendous interest and attendance at the NAFC National Health Care Symposium that was held in October. Recognizing that it can be difficult to get away to two big meetings just a few weeks apart, we decided it would be advantageous to move the Retreat to the spring so you could also attend the National Symposium in the fall. More information to follow.

Vendor Suggestions
Each year we arrange for vendors to attend our Leadership Retreat to showcase their company and products that can benefit you. To that end, I would like to know the type of vendors (who and/or service/product) you would like to see at the meeting. This is another way you can help us make the retreat even more beneficial to you and your staff and board members. Along with your ideas, let me know if you have a contact with any potential vendor . If you make a suggestion, you'll be entered into a drawing for a $25 gift card . If you make a suggestion AND provide a vendor contact you'll have two entries in the drawing for the gift card. Email your ideas to me by Friday, January 31, 2020.

Some vendors in the past have included Americares, TCI Software, Rx Outreach and Zolor.

HealthConnex Training Opportunities
Now that many of you have implemented an EMR and are connecting to NC HealthConnex, there are questions that are arising about using NC HealthConnex to it's full potential. New training opportunities are now available with AHEC and the NC HIEA teaming up to provide training for NC HealthConnex. Click here for more information . Training request form .

NCAFCC T-Shirts Available

NCAFCC t-shirts (with this design on the back and the NCAFCC logo on the front) were provided to people who attended the National Symposium in October. They have proven to be hugely popular both with our clinics but also with people from other states. We can print shirts for anyone who wants to get one. The price is $21.33 for sizes small through extra-large, plus shipping. Slightly more for other sizes. If you would like to order a shirt for yourself and/or members and volunteers of your clinic, you can email Mark with the sizes and quantity and you'll get a quote before placing the order.
