American Samoa Governor Commits to Supporting StarKist
Governor Pulaalii Nikolao Pula has assured the new CEO and President of StarKist Company, Mr. Eunhong Edward Min, of his commitment to supporting the cannery.
Mr. Min, who was on his first visit since being appointed to head StarKistP Co., paid a courtesy visit to the Governor on Wednesday.
During their discussions, Governor Pulaali’i noted that fostering economic expansion through the private sector, while streamlining government operations remains a central focus of his leadership. Continue reading here (Source: Talanei).

Status of the World Fisheries for Tuna. ISSF Report - March 2025
ISSF 2025-01: Status of the World Fisheries for Tuna. March 2025 summarizes and rates the status and management of 23 major commercial tuna stocks, based on the most recent scientific assessments as well as management measures adopted by the RFMOs.
Known as ISSF’s “Status of the Stocks” report, it uses a consistent methodology focused on three factors: Abundance, Exploitation/Management, and Environmental Impact (bycatch). It does not replace the more detailed information available directly from the RFMOs. But it does serve as a single source in which uniform information is presented. Pacific Extends European Union Marine Deal
The Pacific-European Union Marine Partnership (PEUMP) has been extended to September 1.
The extension agreement was formalised at the Honiara Summit in the Solomon Islands by the European Union, the Government of Sweden, the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA), the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Program (SPREP).

Philippines Signs Sustainable Fisheries Management Deal with Palau
The Philippines and Palau have signed an agreement to manage their fisheries more sustainably, the Department of Agriculture (DA) said.
The parties to the agreement — the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and Palau’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and the Environment involves fighting illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, promoting technology sharing, and advancing fisheries infrastructure development.
The agreement involves collaborating in conserving highly migratory fish stocks in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean, which is home to commercially important fish species such as tuna and billfish. Continue reading here (Source: BusinessWorld).

Western Pacific Council's Science Advisors Examine Electronic Monitoring for Longline Fisheries
The Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council’s Scientific and Statistical Committee (SSC) met this week to address key issues on electronic monitoring (EM) implementation in longline fisheries. EM uses camera systems to monitor fishing activity onboard vessels while at sea. Discussions centered on EM sampling strategies, funding uncertainties and socioeconomic impacts on Hawai‘i and American Samoa fisheries. An EM program is envisioned to be the primary at-sea monitoring and data collection mechanism for the 150 and 11 active vessels in the Hawai‘i and American Samoa longline fisheries, respectively. Peruvian Fisherman Lost for 95 Days in Pacific Ocean Returns Home
A Peruvian fisherman who spent 95 days lost in the Pacific Ocean, eating roaches, birds and sea turtles to survive, is returning home to his family.
Maximo Napa had set off for a fishing trip from Marcona, a town on the southern Peruvian coast, on December 7. He packed food for a two-week trip, but ten days in, stormy weather threw his boat off course and he ended up adrift in the Pacific Ocean. Continue reading here (Source: NBC).
