COVID-19 Impacts Illustrated in 2020 US Pacific Islands Fisheries Reports

The Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council released the 2020 Annual Stock Assessment and Fishery Evaluation (SAFE) Reports June 30, 2021, for the Hawai‘i, American Samoa and Mariana Archipelagos, and Pacific Pelagic and Pacific Remote Island Areas. Each year, the Council, National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Hawai‘i Division of Aquatic Resources, American Samoa Department of Marine and Wildlife Resources, Guam Division of Aquatic and Wildlife Resources and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) Division of Fish and Wildlife collaborate to assemble the reports. They summarize annual fishery performance, including trends in catch, effort and catch rates, and describe various ecosystem considerations, such as changes in climate, socioeconomic trends and protected species interactions. The information is utilized by fisheries managers to ensure fisheries remain sustainable so they can provide a consistent supply of fish to meet demand and mitigate potential issues in the function of fisheries. Continue reading here (Source: Pacific Islands Fishery News).
ISSF - Purse Seine Tuna Fleet Grew from 1,721 in 2020 to 1,855 Today

The International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF) has updated its Large-Scale Tuna Purse Seine Fishing Fleets report as of July 2021. The total number of purse seine vessels, calculated based on data from the five tuna Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs), has increased from 1,721 in 2020 to 1,855 today.

The report also shows approximately 678 vessels (down 2.6 percent from last year) defined as large-scale purse seine (LSPS) vessels targeting tropical tuna species (skipjackyellowfin, and bigeye), with a combined fishing capacity of over 865,000 m3 (cubic meters).

Having an accurate estimate of active vessels is critical for managing tuna fishing capacity regionally as well as globally. Although purse seine vessels account for approximately 69 percent of the 5.0 million-tonne global tuna catch, multiple databases must be searched to compile a count of all authorized purse seine vessels.

Thai Union Makes Strategic Investment in R&B Food Supply

Thai Union Group PCL (Thai Union) today announced a 10 percent strategic investment valued at about THB 3 billion in R&B Food Supply PCL (RBF), Thailand’s leading food ingredients company specializing in flavors, colors and coating. This investment follows a multi-year relationship between Thai Union and RBF in which RBF has been supplying high quality food ingredients for Thai Union products.

The strategic partnership accelerates Thai Union’s growth opportunities in the adjacent food ingredients industry, particularly to serve the increasing sophistication of ASEAN consumers. RBF’s innovative ingredients, such as natural flavors and hemp extracts, can enhance both Thai Union’s core offerings and newer products, including in alternative protein and pet care. For RBF, the partnership will enhance its ability to integrate vertically into Thai Union’s supply chain, and leverage Thai Union’s global footprint for its own international expansion. With a shared vision for innovative food solutions, both companies will leverage their respective capabilities to generate additional value to our customers and stakeholders. Vietnam Goes Past Thailand, Becomes Israel's Biggest Tuna Supplier

Vietnam surpassed Thailand in the first half of this year to become the biggest exporter of tuna to Israel.

It accounted for 31 percent of Israel's imports while that country became Vietnam's third largest market behind the U.S. and Italy.

Israel bought less tuna from most countries amid the COVID-19 pandemic, but increased its imports from Vietnam, the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) said.

Latest data from VASEP shows that Vietnam’s exports to Israel jumped by 34 percent during the year until Aug. 15 to nearly $25 million. Continue reading here (Source: VN Express).

Hawaii Longline Fleet's Switch to Shark-Friendly Gear Taking Longer than Expected

The Hawaii longline fleet’s efforts to replace its steel fishing leaders with more shark-friendly nylon ones are taking longer than expected.

Last year, the Hawaii Longline Association announced plans to voluntarily make the gear switch aboard all of its 143 or so fishing vessels by July.

On Tuesday, however, a protected-species coordinator with the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council, or Wespac, reported that the HLA is only two-thirds of the way through that transition. Continue reading here (Source: Honolulu Civil Beat).
