Century Tuna Maker Sees Limited Fallout from US Tariffs

Despite the strength of its export market last year, Century Pacific Food Inc. (CNPF) is not expecting the United States’ new tariffs to significantly gnaw on overall sales, citing its limited exposure to America.

CNPF executive chair Christopher Po told the Inquirer in a statement on Tuesday that the United States accounted for only 5 percent of the company’s total sales. Continue reading here (Source: Business Inquirer).

Trump Tariffs Threaten Low-Cost Southeast Asia Manufacturers

The new "reciprocal" tariffs imposed globally by U.S. President Donald Trump are fueling concern that higher costs will squeeze businesses in Southeast Asia that have relied on inexpensive labor.

Among the areas at risk are the fisheries and garment industries, which are especially labor-intensive and count on the U.S. as a major market. Continue reading here (Source: Nikkei Asia).

Reports Indicate Trump Planning to Gut NOAA, Transfer Fisheries Functions to US Fish and Wildlife Service

The Trump administration is planning to make severe cuts to NOAA Fisheries, transferring most fisheries services to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services (USFWS), according to internal documents obtained by CNN.

“This is ludicrous! Whether you live on a coast or in the heartland, these proposed cuts to NOAA will impact you,” Oceana Vice President for the United States Beth Lowell said in a statement. “Eliminating funding and staffing won’t just cause chaos and confusion within NOAA – it would undermine people and businesses across the country.” Continue reading here (Source: SeafoodSource).

Europeche Urges Indian Ocean Tuna Commission to Strengthen Monitoring, Control and Surveillance

As the 29th session of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) opens in La Réunion from April 13, 2025, the Europêche Tuna Group (ETG) calls on contracting parties to adopt concrete measures to ensure effective and sustainable management of tropical tuna stocks.

With yellowfin and skipjack tuna currently in healthy condition and bigeye tuna showing signs of recovery under quota and catch allocation management, it is the time for the IOTC to take bold steps to protect the gains achieved — especially by aligning all fleets under the same rigorous standards. The Path to Sustainable Tuna Fisheries

Even if there are plenty of fish in the sea, tuna reigns supreme. Supporting millions of jobs and a multi-billion dollar market, we eat it in everything from delicate makizushi rolls to tuna fish sandwiches. Besides its outsized role in our lives, tuna is literally a behemoth, with some species rivaling the weight of a small car.

Unfortunately, overfishing has increased since the 1970s and nearly 38 percent of global fishery stocks are unsustainably harvested, according to a 2024 United Nations report. Tuna is no exception. Certain stocks, or populations, of yellowfin, albacore and bluefin tuna declined steeply over the past decades. Several species were even listed as threatened on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s Red List, which tracks species’ conservation status.
