Marshall islands Guards 'Treasures' With New Marine Sanctuary
Marshall Islands declared on Tuesday its first national marine sanctuary, protecting a "pristine" expanse of tropical Pacific Ocean home to deep-sea sharks and green turtles.
Like many Pacific islands, the low-lying Marshall Islands are highly vulnerable to climate change and rising seas, which has placed "extreme pressure" on its biodiversity, the World Bank warned in 2021.
It announced Tuesday that it has banned fishing in the waters surrounding two northern isles, an area teeming with vibrant corals, rare giant clams and reclusive deep-sea sharks. Continue reading here (Source: Barron's).

US Bill Would Create New Method for Testing Tuna Country of Origin
United States senators have introduced legislation that would task the federal government with developing a new methodology for identifying where tuna and red snapper sold in the U.S. originated from.
If passed, the Illegal Red Snapper and Tuna Enforcement Act would direct the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and NOAA with creating a field test kit that uses a chemical agent to determine whether red snapper or certain species of tuna originated in foreign waters. Ecuador President Says New Trade Deal with Canada Finalized
Ecuador and Canada have finalized a new trade accord following months of negotiations, Ecuadorean President Daniel Noboa said on social media on Sunday.
Noboa’s government expects the trade deal to promote local job growth from sectors including flowers, canned tuna, textiles and auto parts, among others, according to a statement. Noboa’s statement noted that the deal involves commitments from both countries covering labor and environmental policies.
The trade talks kicked off last March and spanned six rounds of negotiations.

European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and Thailand Sign Free Trade Agreement
On 23 January 2025, the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and the Kingdom of Thailand signed a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on the margins of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland.
The FTA was signed on behalf of the EFTA States by Martin Eyjólfsson, Permanent Secretary of State of Iceland; Dominique Hasler, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Education and Sport of Liechtenstein; Cecilie Myrseth, Minister of Trade and Industry of Norway; and Guy Parmelin, Federal Councillor and Head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research of Switzerland; and for Thailand by Pichai Naripthaphan, Minister of Commerce. Amata Cautions Pacific Fisheries on Easy Economic Arrangements with Strings Attached
Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata is sounding a note of caution to Pacific Islands nations that sign agreements with China for economic interests.

EU Tuna Fleet Stresses Science-Based Management in RFMOs
The Européche Tuna Group has reaffrmed the importance of science-driven decision-making in regional fisheries management organisations (RFMOs) following a high-level meeting between industry and scientific experts.
The meeting. held in Bermeo on 21 January, brought together scientists from the French Institut de recherche pour le développement (IRD). the Instituto Espafiol de Oceanografia (IEO), and Spain's AZTI research institute. Discussions focused on improving the alignment of fisheries management with scientific evaluation and incorporating socio-economic indicators into decision-making. Solomon Islands is Preparing to Host the Honiara Summit 2025
Solomon Islands is preparing to host the Honiara Summit 2025, an international gathering focused on the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14.4: Conserving and sustainably using oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development.
With the theme “Iumi tugeda delivering on SDG 14.4: Achieving Sustainable Fisheries” the Honiara Summit will bring together Pacific leaders, global experts and representatives from 24 – 27 February 2025 to address the need for sustainable fisheries management in the region.
