Audio-Reader is LIVE!

Audio-Reader started broadcasting our Breakfast Table Times program LIVE on October 25. This was our first live broadcast since March 2020. After a 31-month hiatus we are excited to have our KC Star and Topeka Capital-Journal readers back at the Round Table! Breakfast Table Times coverage will be live Monday-Friday going forward.

On the weekends, the studios will remain closed and we will not return to live readings of the Breakfast Table Times. We don't have plans to restart the afternoon live programs.

Contact Alison ([email protected]) if you are interested and available on weekday mornings to be a substitute for live readings. We currently have all the assignments filled for the Monday-Friday Breakfast Table Times. However, if you are interested in a permanent live reading assignment, let us know and we will contact you when an opening arises.

We look forward to celebrating the holidays with all of you!

Audio Store Opens

Did you miss our Audio Sale in September? Now is your chance to come shop our store and check out all of the audio goods we have!

Saturday, November 12

1:00 - 3:30 PM

Come shop our audio equipment, vinyl records, cassette tapes, CDs, DVDs, musical instruments and more! There is no ticket required for the store, it’s free admission. Now is your chance to find good audio treasures for your or for that certain someone on your holiday shopping list (yes, the holidays will be upon us soon!).

We are in need of volunteer help for the store on Saturday, November 12! If you are available that day, we can use help with set up, working the sale, and/or cleanup of the sale, any time from 12:30pm-4:00pm. Please contact Meredith Johanning if you are able to help at [email protected].

Open Assignments

Are you interested in a weekly assignment, or have time for another reading? We are looking for volunteers for the following assignments:

Digital Broadcast (record in studio or from home on a computer with an external microphone):

  • Monday Sunflower Dailies: 56-58 minute program comprising 14 minute recordings from the Emporia Gazette, Hutchinson News, Salina Journal and the Manhattan Mercury. File due by 12:30 PM on Monday.
  • African American Hour, monthly 56-58 minute recording, reading from a variety of local and national sources. File due on the third Friday of each month at Noon.

Telephone Reader (record at home via your landline or mobile phone):

  • Joplin Globe, Sunday, complete recording by 11 AM
  • Walgreens Ad, Sunday, complete recording by 11 AM

Contact Alison ([email protected], 785-864-4604) with questions or to sign up!

New and Improved Substitute Sign Up

Many volunteers have tried and loved the new Volunteer Substitute sign-up. This new system uses the web-based program TeamUp, where all of Audio-Reader's volunteer schedules already live.

TeamUp lets volunteers see what substitutes are needed for the next month, see what sub assignments they have signed up for AND get instructions for assignments. Volunteers will also be able to sign up directly for the assignments they want to help with - no need to email Alison and wait to hear back.

Here is how it works:

  1. Click on the TeamUp icon adjacent to this text or the button below to go to the TeamUp website and see all the subs that are needed for the next month. AND bookmark the TeamUp page on your computer.
  2. Green assignments have been filled, purple assignments need a sub.
  3. Click on the assignment you want to sub for and click on the blue "sign up" button on the right hand side. Fill in your name and email address - and you are done!
  4. As we get started I will email you to confirm your assignment. We will determine if this step is needed long-term.

A couple of things to note:

  • Telephone Reader assignments start with the letter "P" followed by the program number and message number. Assignments that start with the first three letters of a week day (ie. Mon, Tue, Wed) are for the digital broadcast and need to be recorded on a computer at home or in studio.
  • Telephone Reader assignments must be completed between 5-10 AM Monday-Friday and 5-11 AM on Saturday & Sunday. Broadcast program files are due one hour before the air time listed in TeamUp.
  • You can, but don't have to, use the TeamUp App on your iPhone or Android device. The TeamUp icon is in the upper right hand corner of this article. You don't need an account, just enter the web address from the link below into the app. You can then access the calendar and sign up for assignments through the app.

Thank you for all you do for Audio-Reader!!

HEAR Campaign

Our annual year-end mail campaign, the Help Expand Audio-Reader, or “HEAR” letter, will be coming to you in early December.

This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and is essential for us to provide the 24/7 award-winning services our listeners depend on. As one listener from Leavenworth stated, “Audio-Reader makes life bearable and happier for those of us who are sight limited. You keep me abreast with life.”

Please consider a gift of any amount, and thank you for all you do for Audio-Reader!

Office and Studio Hours

Audio-Reader studios and offices permanent hours

Monday - Friday from 8 AM - 5 PM. Appointments are no longer needed to visit the building.

If you are not reading at our Lawrence studios and would like to, PLEASE contact Alison ([email protected]). We would love to get you back into the building and/or back reading!

If you were a book reader and do not plan on returning, PLEASE stop by to pick up your book! Alison will hold your books through 2022 and donate any abandoned books to LPL in the new year.
