SecureFutures celebrates Volunteer Appreciation Month every June, but we're grateful for our volunteers all year long, especially in an unusual year like this one. We've been so inspired by the way you've stepped up to the challenges of virtual learning so that we could continue connecting teens to the financial education and mentorship that is so critical to their successful futures. Thank you for your flexibility and dedication -- we couldn't do this without you! See a full list of our 2020-2021 volunteers.

So many of our volunteers go far beyond the curriculum, creating genuine and lasting connections with teens that help them on their way towards their life goals. One example is Jackie Schmidley, a first time Money Coach volunteer this year, who made it her mission to create career development opportunities for the teens she was mentoring. Read more about Jackie and her mentee Malachi.
"Jackie was an incredible coach. She makes it easy to open up, because she shares her experiences. She has helped me a lot with teaching me about financial goals and keeping me on track."
Malachi, Money Coach participant through Urban Underground
"Every adult has something to share around the topic of financial literacy because we all have first hand life experience. I would definitely encourage anyone considering volunteering to get off the sidelines and give it a try!"

A virtual year in Money Coach

Our first year of fully virtual Money Coach is in the books, with 208 students, 68 volunteers, and 20 site partners. It came with plenty of challenges, but also some unexpected benefits. Many coaches told us that meeting with students virtually allowed for more flexibility and focused time, enabling them to form deeper mentoring relationships. Here's what a few of our 2020-2021 Money Coach students told us were their favorite things about the experience:

"My favorite things about Money Coach is all of the resources they have provided us with. My other favorite thing about them is how much they teach us about credit and the importance of saving. I really never understood how important it was but they really emphasized that for me. Money Coach is shaping me how to be an adult.
Imani, student at Golda Meir High School

My favorite thing about Money Coach was the one on one meeting with my coach. She was always available so if I needed a question answered I can just email her or call her. Another was the Money Path app. It really helped me learn how my financial standing will be in the future.
Anna, student at Hmong American Peace Academy

My favorite things about Money Coach was sitting down and writing down all my expenses and the one on one meeting I had with my coach. Both of these things opened my eyes.
Mareya, student at South Division High School
