Words of Wellness Wisdom
from Susan Greeley, MS, RDN,
National Director, Wellness Services

What a year 2020 has been, and I think we're all thankful that it's coming to a close soon?! This is certainly the time of year to reflect and give thanks, and I do know that the pandemic has brought many silver linings and "blessings in disguise," such as how many members have participated in SENS Wellness webinars and how lucky we are to have our truly amazing physicians and you, our Members. I am constantly thinking about how to help support you all from an overall wellness standpoint and bring you timely and helpful tools to do so.

In this last SENS Wellness Letter of 2020, I want to step away from the focus on the virus and not overlook the need for prevention of all disease, particularly cardiovascular disease and cancer. Every October is "National Breast Cancer Awareness Month" and this month is "American Diabetes Month". With that, I want to remind all how important our daily habits are and how they support our individual health. You can read more about that below in the monthly blog articles about breast cancer and diabetes prevention. Since diet plays a key role, of course I'd like to mention my simple recipe for my favorite winter squash, the beautiful delicata! It's an easy addition to your diet this time of year and helps to fill you with some fiber and vitamins and antioxidants in a delicious way!

I want to also give a preview of an exciting new SENS endeavor for 2021! We are launching a wellness podcast! Stay tuned for some truly exceptional guests joining me to discuss many health & wellness topics.

Finally, we all need some pampering this holiday season, and our Affinity Partners are happy to offer Members some fabulous self-care and other gift ideas. Stay tuned for their holiday offers that we'll be sending out in December.

Please read on and stay abreast of all our wellness efforts. Wishing everyone a very happy and safe holiday season. Be well, stay well and focus on the positives of the moment and continue to look forward to a brighter future!

Yours in health,

Susan
Your “Lights Out” Routine May Be the Key to Avoiding Burn Out
Stress and exhaustion can get the best of us any time of year, and getting enough sleep is critical to combat both. Even if getting quality shut eye every night doesn’t seem possible, making a few adjustments to your “lights-out” routine might be the key to help you avoid burn out.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

It’s also the perfect time to consider making some lifestyle changes to help improve your overall health (and ward off disease.) One of the most common cancers in the U.S. among women, an estimated one in eight women develop breast cancer in their lifetimes. [1] As for prevention, we know that maintaining a healthy diet, not smoking, and limiting alcohol intake can help — and research also shows that getting exercise is vital.

November is National
Diabetes Month
(And Covid Made Us All More Aware!)

Now more than ever, most Americans are very aware that having pre-diabetes and diabetes can make them more susceptible to covid-19. Instead of fearing this though, it's time to focus on what you can do to lower your risk and help others as well!
