A Note From Kurt Fanning
As Thanksgiving approaches, I’m grateful this year to have joined the CloudWave family. After working for a number of years at MEDITECH and health IT ecosystem, I had the opportunity this spring to not only join my old co-workers and partners, but to represent a company whose technical expertise is head and shoulders above the rest.

For those who may not realize, CloudWave’s team has a long legacy in healthcare IT. Several of us have worked together in some capacity for over 2 decades.
Some have even formed friendships outside of work that continue to this day. We’ve seen many changes in the industry during this time, but one thing remains the same – these people are dedicated to the success of our customers and understand the importance technology has in the delivery of quality patient care.

I’m pleased to be part of a company that has grown to be the largest, most experienced and the most trusted in the space.  Running all operations from within, our support staff ensures unrivalled customer success and satisfaction. As more hospitals move closer to adopting cloud solutions each year, CloudWave will continue to deliver superior, reliable service with the latest security measures to keep their hospitals and ultimately patients safe.

Although 2021 wasn’t at full-strength, I was happy to represent CloudWave at industry shows such as HIMSS in Las Vegas and HLTH in Boston. And of course, it was great to gather again the night before the MEDITECH CIO & Physician Forum at CBS Sporting Club in Foxborough and reconnect with familiar faces after a long year apart.

Being able to continue to work with MEDITECH hospitals alongside a trusted circle of CloudWave associates makes a huge difference when coming to work each day. I look forward to collaborating with more of you in 2022.

Patching – It’s a Patient Safety Issue

Running unpatched applications and infrastructure can directly impact patient safety. Imagine a patient requiring emergency surgery and just as the clinicians are preparing the patient the computer systems fail due to a security exploit on an unpatched system.
Everyone understands the need to stay current on patches, but no matter how well this is understood it doesn’t happen at many hospitals. A recent survey by the Ponemon Institute found 57% of respondents who faced a security breach said the hacks were due to vulnerabilities in unpatched software. Thirty-four percent of the effected sites were aware of the holes in their software but didn’t patch them in time.

DEADLINE
January 1 for Multi-Factor Authentication
We ask that all existing OpSus Live customers implement an MFA solution by January 1, 2022.

MFA is a critical component of our overall security strategy at OpSus, and we have made it mandatory for OpSus Live customers to test and implement a MFA solution by the new year.

MFA is proven to prevent password-based cybercrime, and defends against phishing attempts, keylogging attacks, hacking threats, and more.

Meet David Afnani
Sr. Cloud Systems Management Engineer
Many CloudWave employees have spent their careers in healthcare IT.

As a CloudWave Cloud Security Engineer David Afnani helps his team “keep the bad guys out”.

With the growing number of bad actors finding creative ways to intrude into hospital infrastructures, David works not only to prevent entry but detect when a bad actor is attempting to break in. In addition, he checks other systems for entry and ensures relevant security controls are in place and are working properly. And in the rare case where there is a security incident, he’s there and ready to help.

Before a recruiter reached out in January 2018 to introduce him to CloudWave, David spent 8 years traveling the country doing “endless penetration tests,” physical security site reviews and onsite social engineering engagements. He was looking for a change.

“I instantly liked the name of company and the prospect of playing defense again for patients and their doctors.” He goes on to explain, “My wife is a PA and has complained about poor connectivity and slow EHRs affecting her patient care. I understand how important it is for the doctors and the patients to have readily available, accurate healthcare records. Unfortunately, bad actors understand this too.”

David is working toward obtaining an AWS Certified Security certification. He currently holds CompTIA Security + and GIAC Web Application Penetration Test certifications.

When David isn’t helping to protect hospitals he enjoys golf, running and the great outdoors.

“If I can do any of these things with my family then there’s nothing better.”
