A Prayer from The Color Purple

God you love everything you love — and a mess of stuff I don't. But more than anything else, God love I think you like to be admired just like the rest of us!

You just wanting to share a good thing. I think it makes you mad if I walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don't notice it, right?

Oh, but sometimes I don't notice. So, you make something else. People think being pleased is all you care about. But any fool living in the world can see you is always trying to please us back.

You're always making little surprises and springing them on us when us least expect.

Yes, you want us to love you, and we want you to love us, too! Everything want to be loved. Us sing and dance, make faces and give flower bouquets, trying to be loved.

You ever notice that trees do everything to git attention we do, except walk?

Help us notice, God.

Amen.

Save the bunny, save the world...

Sunday, February 8

During Sunday School

Here's what we know:

Alex, the new kid? He didn't take Honey, the beloved class bunny. He was set up by Emma!

But you still have to find the bunny. Two case envelopes remain.

I will have the case files set up in the EYC room this week if you would like to finish the case!

Alice Walker

Karl Barth

In Alice Walker's The Color Purple,  in Alice Walker's her protagonists' understanding of God shifts from a traditional, patriarchal, and white-centric God to a pantheistic, indwelling, and queer-affirming spirituality. Through Shug Avery, the novel promotes a womanist theology where God is, “Everything that is or ever was or ever will be,” emphasizing that the divine is found within oneself and in nature, not just in church.

This view is in stark contract to what Karl Barth (Remember him from last week's newsletter? He is considered one of the most influential theologians in the 20th Century! He said:

“The power of God, can be detected neither in the world of nature nor in the souls of humans. It must not be confounded with any high, exalted, force, known or knowable.

For Parents!

Try the parent forum for youth ministry HERE! You’ll need to use your email address to join. And a class code may be required, as well (pwdlelps). Once you enter the site you'll find a new question for the week:

Consider what our youth ministry has primarily been about in recent memory. Provide examples of what we want to see happen with our youth ministry and in the lives of our young people. Create a “living” plan for what we dream youth ministry at St. John’s will be like in 5 years.
