Call on Me: A Prayerbook for Young People

The days are getting longer.

Keep your Spirit in my heart and mind

during this growing season.

Be with me as I finish the school year,

participate in summer activities,

enjoy the gift of summer turning into fall.

Help me recognize your works in all that I do

at work,

at rest,

and at play,

so that I can give thank for all you provide,

even without my even asking.

Amen.

Summer is so very close. The season of sticky fingers and bare feet when we are children, summer can become - as we get older - just another season...an in between time, as we hover at the end of one school year but not yet at the beginning of another. But at it's best, summer can be the beginning of a season of possibility. The days are not yet (at least, I hope!) scheduled and full. They can be anything. And such is life with God.

Anything can happen this Summer.

Are you worried about "wasting" your time this Summer?

If I'm honest, I've worried about wasting every extended break I've ever had. So much so that, historically, I have planned to pack each day full of the things that I want to do (or think that I want to do, at least) when thinking about summer vacation.

There's just one problem. Those plans? Those days that were previously filled with mystery and possibility? Well, they are transformed into a burden. They become nothing more that conduits for things I must do because, well, I planned to do them.

How quickly we can turn gospel (i.e., the good news of rest and possibility) into law (i.e., something that must be acted upon if it is to have any meaning).

What would happen, I wonder, if we were to simply let the Summer happen to us?

Think about that with someone you're close to this week.

School's out and there's ice cream to be eaten - what more needs to be said?!Bring a friend and join us at Tess' Place downtown to close out the year!

Inspired by the lives of saints like Francis and Martin or Tours and Therese and Catherine, St. John’s Hero Academy VBS invites children to consider how following Jesus’ call to love and serve others is the most heroic thing of all. Children will create projects in the Hero Maker Design Studio, play high-energy games in the Gamer’s Gauntlet, hear stories of the faithful in the Hero Archives, and relax with a treat or two and the Holy Hero Caf?. All the while, they will discover that we can indeed serve like the saints!

This year, we are partnering with the 3^rd Street Boys and Girls Club once more and hope to show God’s love and care to even more children than last year! But this means that WE NEED YOUR HELP! IF you would like to volunteer to help with VBS, read the volunteer descriptions HERE. Then sign up next to your desired work area with your name and availability HERE.
