Greetings!

Fall is almost here and it’s time to start planning your Fall 2018 recruiting events! Fall is the busiest time for companies to host info sessions and tech talks on campus because it is when all of the top students are choosing their internships or full-time jobs for June. To secure your company's spot in our campus recruiting schedule, please contact Ashley Antoon at antoon@engineering.ucsb.edu to schedule an info session , meet and greet tabling or send out any last minute job postings .

We are proud to be ranked among the top engineering graduate programs in the nation. Among public schools, U.S. News & World Report, ranks UC Santa Barbara College of Engineering as #12 in Graduate Engineering programs, #2 in Materials and #7 in Chemical Engineering Graduate Programs! Duncan Mellichamp, Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering, received the UC Academic Senate's 2018 Oliver Johnson Award. In this newsletter we highlight some of the collaborative research the college has been conducting, along with conferences.
Cutting-Edge Big Data Research for Analyzing Large-scale Images
UC Santa Barbara researchers have been pushing the envelope in big data research, leading to breakthroughs that will benefit academia, business and society.  B. S. Manjunath, professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and director of the campus’s Center for Multimodal Big Data Science and Healthcare, is a leading faculty member whose lab has developed advanced tools that organize, manage, annotate, and process large-scale multi-dimensional data, including images and video.

Manjunath’s lab is highlighted in the Summer Quarter '18 edition of Convergence, the magazine of engineering and science at UC Santa Barbara. Among other achievements, his team developed BisQue (Bio-Image Semantic Query User Environment), which is already being used for various big data image projects in healthcare, materials science, biology and marine science.  The critical and unique feature of BisQue is that its modular architecture can scale to a wide range of data types and applications that can be tailored to different user needs, and the upcoming release would further integrate the recent advances in deep learning.  Organizations that have deployed BisQue in production include the NSF supported Cyberinfrasturtcure (“CyVerse”) at the University of Arizona where BisQue is offered as a core service for all of the image data processing and the Center For Digital Health Innovation at UCSF.

Corporate partners with an interest in large-scale image analysis are encouraged to partner with the Center for Multimodal Big Data Science. For more information, please contact Marcel Badart at  marcel.badart@engineering.ucsb.edu.

The UC Santa Barbara Chemical Engineering Graduate Student Symposium is a one-day forum for graduate students to present their research. The event is designed to provide a networking opportunity between industrial attendees and members of the department with two main goals:
  1. Highlight ongoing work in the department to stimulate industrial collaborations
  2. Facilitate interactions with students seeking future employment opportunities

The symposium consists of oral presentations given by senior students throughout the day, a lunch and poster session showcasing the work throughout the department, and a catered evening reception. Industrial attendees will receive a flash drive containing the abstracts and CVs of presenting students to enable future connections.
8th International Conference on the Internet of Things (IoT 2018)
The 8th International Conference on the Internet of Things hosted by the  Center for Spatial Studies  at  UC Santa Barbara  will take place from  October 15–18, 2018  in Santa Barbara, California, USA.
Capstone (CS)
The heart of the experience of this course is an industry-sponsored project in which students get the opportunity to work on real world challenges provided and mentored by corporate partners. This has been a very popular course over the years and is growing steadily. It has provided our students with the chance to work as a team to solve all aspects of an engineering problem from concept, prototype, testing and deployment. It has benefited our corporate partners by giving them the opportunity to work with the students, observe them solving these challenges in a logical manner, and identify potential interns or future employees. Participation also allows for a very visible corporate presence on the UC Santa Barbara campus.

The capstone course sequence is offered during the Fall and Winter quarters at UC Santa Barbara with Capstone projects presented to public during the  UC Santa Barbara CS Summit  on March 16 th , 2019 in Corwin Pavilion!

To sponsor a project, please contact: Chandra Krintz, ckrintz@cs.ucsb.edu
