Greetings!

In this newsletter we highlight the successful inaugural Chemistry Career Day and the annual Materials Research Outreach Symposium (MROP). We also include the latest updates on our Quantum Foundry research center as well as links to articles with more information on quantum.
Quantum Foundry

The Quantum Foundry is a research center sponsored by the National Science Foundation that looks to develop the materials and tools for powering the coming age of quantum information-based devices. The center supports 24 investigators who will model, synthesize, and study a broad spectrum of materials that house robust electronic states capable of encoding quantum information. A graduate training program in quantum information science will be formed as well as an intertwined role of industrial partners at all levels of the Foundry’s operation. The goal is to serve as a national hub for innovating the materials and devices underpinning the coming age of quantum-based electronics.
Chemistry Career Day Success
The Chemistry Career Day, inaugurated in 2019, is an annual event organized by the Chemistry Professional Development (ChemPD) group of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry (DCB) for the purpose of enhancing networking between industry and the DCB graduate students and postdoctoral scholars interested in or seeking employment opportunities outside of academia.

Over 100 students representing all major disciplines of the chemical sciences attended the event. Throughout the day, the representatives from 10 companies networked with our students, sharing their personal professional experience and showcase the company they represent. The Career Day included a panel discussion of career opportunities in industry, an interactive lunch and a company recruitment fair.

The 2020 Chemistry Career Day will be on September 24th, 2020 at the Engineering Science Building room 1001. The event will be part of a 2 day Chemical Sciences and Engineering Career Fest, co-hosted by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and the Department of Chemical Engineering.

Materials Research Outreach Symposium (MROP)
January 29-30, 2020
Corwin Pavilion

Materials Research Outreach Symposium (MROP) brings industrial scientists and R&D leaders together with UCSB faculty and a few faculty members and scientists from elsewhere to the UCSB campus. The objective is to showcase the materials research strengths, highlight recent advances and applications in the industrial sector, and provide an opportunity for networking among academic researchers and industrial scientists studying a broad range of materials.

We always appreciate any input you may have on how we can improve, so please don't hesitate to send us your feedback. Thank you for your continued interest in our program. For further information, please visit the Industry Center website at  www.industry.ucsb.edu
