This issue is closely linked to the vitality of Francophone communities, the attractiveness of post-secondary education in French and thus enrollment, but also the role of the various levels of government in maintaining an original model of education that derives its legitimacy from the history of the province, the law and the complexity of Ontario society.

Federalism, Pipelines and Municipalities: Squaring the Circle?

The Centre on Governance is pleased to host a webinar entitled "Federalism, Pipelines and Municipalities: Squaring the Circle?" presented by professors Benoît Frate et David Robitaille.

Canada has recently experienced a major constitutional and political crisis in the transportation of crude oil from the tar sands by pipeline. 
Benoît Frate, LL.B. (Montréal), LL.M., Ph.D. (Ottawa), member of the Bar of Quebec, is a professor at the Department of Urban and Tourism Studies at UQAM where he teaches municipal law, urbanism law, and tourism law.

David Robitaille, LL.L. (Ottawa), LL.M. (Laval), Ph.D. (Ottawa), member of the Bar of Quebec, is a professor at the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa where he teaches constitutional law, municipal law, and laws and freedom.

An Interdisciplinary Perspective on the Future Canada Water Agency

This bilingual and interdisciplinary event is organized by the Public Law Centre, the Centre on Governance, and the Centre for Environmental Law and Global Sustainability at the University of Ottawa, with the support from the Alex Trebek Forum for Dialogue.

The conference will examine the challenges and opportunities around the establishment of the Canadian Water Agency, in particular from the perspectives of social sciences.
Four themes will be explored: legal considerations for Canadian water governance, mechanisms for Canadian water governance, international experiences in water governance, sectoral approaches in water resource protection.

New Public Management and Social Work: When Management Gets Involved

The Centre on Governance is pleased to invite you to the webinar "New Public Management and Social Work: When Management Gets Involved" (Event in French only).

This presentation aims to present the results of a qualitative research on the perception of social workers of the 2015 health and social services reforms in Quebec. The results of the semi-structured interviews show that their working conditions cause suffering at work.

This three-day virtual conference, scheduled for April 21-23, is organized by the Centre on Governance at the University of Ottawa, with the support from the Alex Trebek Forum for Dialogue, and in collaboration with the McGill Institute for the Study of Canada and the School of Public Policy of the University of Calgary.

With the support from Secrétariat du Québec aux relations canadiennes and the Forum of federations.
This conference features some of the most prominent Canadian scholars and experts on a wide range of topics related to fiscal federalism.

The Centre on Governance is launching its professional development program!

The Centre on Governance is very pleased to announce the launch of of its professional development program in collaboration with the Professional Development Institute at the University of Ottawa.

One of the axes of the knowledge mobilization plan of the Centre on Governance targets professional development. As a research centre, it is our responsibility to support organizations in the public, private and non-profit sectors in the search for innovative approaches to governance.

The Public Governance Series is developed by the Professional Development Institute of the University of Ottawa in collaboration with the Center on Governance to support the professional development of employees in the public and parapublic sector in Canada and across the world. By mixing university research and professional development, we wish to design a space for exchanges between academics and public administration professionals in order to create a vehicle for the mobilization of academic knowledge. This series supports the strategic research axes of the Faculty of Social Sciences and in particular the Governance, Politics and Open Societies axis.
POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW 2021-2022
The Centre on Governance is pleased to welcome Lauren Touchant as our new postdoctoral fellow!
Lauren Touchant is a PhD in Public Administration Graduate from the School of Political Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ottawa. She is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow with the Centre for Environmental Law and Global Sustainability and the Centre on Governance, and the recipient of the Alex Trebek Scholarship. She is also a 2016-2019 Vanier Scholar. Her thesis focused on how municipalities elaborate policy instruments within municipal networks in environmental and energy governance in Canada and the United States. She explored three primary networks: Partners for Climate Protection, managed by the Canadian Federation of Municipalities; Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiatives; and QUEST Canada. Lauren's research interests are: climate, environmental, and energy policy and governance, the Arctic, and emergency preparedness and disaster management.
