Coach Damon Coupe's Not-So-Excellent Adventure

COACH DAMON COUPE

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA - Nick Carless, head coach of Cal Poly's men's tennis program, waltzed into his first year with a great team already in place and had an "excellent adventure" capturing the conference title and earning an NCAA bid. On the other hand, Damon Coupe, head coach of the women's program, inherited a team with a short roster that was plagued by injuries. Prize freshman recruit, Irene Kuipers from the Netherlands, suffered with a bad back for the entire year and was forced to serve underhanded for several matches. Jennifer Cornea was affected by agonizing leg injuries. Starting the year with only seven players and then having two players out with injuries meant Coach Coupe had to play several matches shorthanded, forfeiting points before the match even started. The Lady Mustangs ultimately lost early in the conference championship and fell out of the national rankings.

I had a chance to sit down with Coach Coupe and capture his thoughts on last season and find out what is on the horizon for the 2012-2013 year.

The Lady Mustangs have been busy this summer. Jennifer Cornea, Ane McPike, and Kathryn Webb have been competing in the ITA Laguna Niguel Tournament. Ane and Kathryn made the semi's in doubles while Jen has advanced to the finals in both the doubles and singles. Congratulations ladies!
Andre Dome Drops Three-Setter in "Qualies"

LOS ANGELES, CA
- After winning two consecutive open tournaments and ten straight matches, Andre Dome made it to the qualifying tournament at UCLA. If he had played well, he could have been propelled to the main draw of the Farmer's Classic. This would have been an excellent opportunity for him to perhaps compete against players like Sam Querry or Xavier Malisse. Andre's first round opponent was Jimmy Wang, a 27-year-old pro who Andre had defeated a year earlier. With Andre up 6-2, 5-2, and on the verge of victory, the momentum suddenly shifted and Wang ended up achieving a 7-5 comeback for the second set victory and then won 6-2 in the third set to take the match.
