Coach on the (Atomic) Power of Habit

Never Too Late to Change

At this time of year, when grades are appearing on course LMS pages and students begin to get more of a sense of how they are performing, many realize they have not set themselves up for success. Habits can play a significant role in their challenges. Some have perpetuated unproductive habits, others have failed to establish beneficial habits, and often it is a combination of both.

Author James Clear, after years of research and exploration of the science and art of habits, published Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones in 2018 and it continues to resonate. The wisdom in this book (see this link for a summary from Clear's website) is an excellent resource for academic coaches who find themselves wanting to help students understand that thoughtful, active change can begin anytime, and can move mountains. Clear refers to small habits as "atomic" for two reasons: One, they are tiny, and two, they are powerful. His focus includes:

  • How to break big, intimidating changes down into incremental small actions that begin to prove change is happening.
  • The importance of envisioning the person you want to become, rather than an achievement you want.
  • The power of systems to make or break your desires for change, and how to change your systems so that they help move you forward.

So when that student comes to you in late October, feeling that they have done everything wrong so far and despairing of what they can do at this point, how can you help them begin to develop atomic habits?

  • Ask: What habits are getting in your way? What habits are helping?
  • Explain the science of habit - how the brain automates a habit over time, so that it takes less cognitive energy to perform; how unproductive habits set up systems that make a person feel powerless; how beneficial habits can drive focus and free up cognitive energy that becomes available for learning.
  • Have the student identify a specific change that, if they could make it happen, would improve their learning and performance this semester.
  • Ask the student to identify a small "two-minute" easy step that they can start to do regularly, and gradual more significant steps that they can build up to over time that will lead them toward the change (more here on the "two-minute" rule and how to automate a small action so that the rest can follow).
  • Have the student identify how they will get started in the next week.
