Coaches Deserve to be Reinvigorated

End-of-Semester Restoration

Students and faculty are not the only ones who need a break as the semester wraps up. Academic coaches and other student-facing staff are ready to step back and restore as well. Coaches have spent months doing work that requires them to be highly present, focused, and responsive. They have led video conference sessions and workshops that required them to try to connect with faceless black rectangles. They have shepherded students over the finish line once again, and might just be found crawling to the sidelines themselves.

Coaches may not necessarily have, or think to create, the regular processing time that they encourage students to take in the service of deep and lasting learning. However, this can be remedied with some time set aside for self-coaching. Coaches, consider these ideas and questions as you reflect on your semester:

  • What went well in your work? Identify a strategy you have put to good use and how.

  • Who has benefited from their work with you? Name one or more students who have clearly grown and become empowered (and if any of them write you notes, keep them in a file for yourself).

  • How might you improve? Identify any goals for growth, and consider how you might move toward such goals this summer.

  • When and where can you rest? Discover the power of being completely away from your work and restoring your mind and spirit.
