Coaches Need a Break Too

Restore Energy and Reset Boundaries

Academic coaching work demands a great deal of energy, focus, and investment. We work to be entirely present for each individual we coach. We strive to adapt our approach to the unique needs of every coachee. We pivot as needed depending on the paths that individual students set for themselves with the agency we provide them. And we champion them at points high and low. The cognitive and emotional energy we expend in this work is immense.

This might be a moment for you, coaches, to decompress — to examine and reset your boundaries, and to restore your energy. And it might not be a one-day activity. Consider that you may need a little time to process the semester and to build some restorative actions into your days. Even if you are soon to launch into work related to summer sessions, investigate what you need and do your best to honor it. You might ask yourself one or more questions like these:

  • What gave me energy this semester? What drained my energy? How might I adjust how I operate based on this information?
  • Where did I maintain useful boundaries? Where did my boundaries get blurry? How might I reset boundaries?
  • What burden am I carrying that doesn't belong to me, and how can I set it down?
  • What burden am I carrying that does belong to me, and how can I unpack it and lighten it?
  • When can I take time to do something that restores my energy and provides rest? What might that look like?
  • How can I insert small doses of restoration into my busier days?

Make 2026 the Year Coaching Solves Higher Ed’s Toughest Challenges

Higher education is grappling with unprecedented challenges—rising mental health crises, the need for greater career readiness, and the unfortunate reality that many students struggle to secure meaningful employment or are let go shortly after starting. These issues affect not only individual students but also university outcomes like enrollment, retention, and long-term institutional success.

By equipping your staff with coaching training, you can help students build resilience, achieve meaningful employment, and address many challenges that universities face today.  Allocate your budget toward LifeBound’s training options this year and plan ahead to ensure your institution is prepared to address these critical needs effectively.  Let’s create a campus-wide culture of coaching and make an impact!
