Coaches Support Integrated Self-Discovery

The Whole Picture Matters

Today's students swim in a sea of buzzwords, aphorisms, and advice videos that purport to help them define themselves and grow. This sea, although fertile, can be exceptionally muddy. Two particular ideas that surface often are "authenticity" and being one's "best self."

Common assumptions may skew the understanding of these ideas. Authenticity is more often associated with the parts of the self that one hesitates to reveal — the messy side, aspects that may drive shame or frustration. On the other hand, the "best self" seems to focus on aspects that one is happy to share — the strengths, accomplishments, and qualities that seem most desired and revered.

Within everyone can be found both challenging and commendable aspects of self. Struggle and strength are each authentic, and can each play a role in operating at our best. If students are able to integrate this picture, their decision-making and actions may more effectively address and learn from challenges as well as maximize strengths. To encourage this integration, coaches might ask questions like these:

  • What does "authenticity" mean to you?

  • How might being authentic include what you are most proud of as well as what you may hesitate to reveal?

  • Describe what you perceive as your "best self."

  • How might your "best self" include aspects of you that, in isolation, you would not consider strong or advantageous?

  • How have your authentic challenges informed your growth?

  • How can you bring a strength to the table to address one of your most present struggles?

Make 2025 the Year Coaching Solves Higher Ed’s Toughest Challenges

Higher education is grappling with unprecedented challenges—rising mental health crises, the need for greater career readiness, and the unfortunate reality that many students struggle to secure meaningful employment or are let go shortly after starting. These issues affect not only individual students but also university outcomes like enrollment, retention, and long-term institutional success.

By equipping your staff with coaching training, you can help students build resilience, achieve meaningful employment, and address many challenges that universities face today.  Allocate your budget toward LifeBound’s training options this year and plan ahead to ensure your institution is prepared to address these critical needs effectively.  Let’s create a campus-wide culture of coaching and make an impact in 2025!
