FOCUSED and Inspired:
I Hear you!

Insights from Lisa Mitzel

If you haven’t met me, I’m a high-achieving person. I get a thrill out of working hard and reaching goals—it’s one of my principal values. But as a coach it can go too far, so I’ve learned to balance that ‘drive’ in sports with human connection and the human calculation. Observing, thinking, and listening to athletes. I learned that athletes perform much better when they receive genuine attention and instruction (and humor). In my twenties, I was too firm with a young athlete; I had higher expectations than she had, apparently, so I told her to do extra push-ups. She hated it. And it was a poor decision. I didn’t know her. I didn’t consider her goals. I was just coaching the skill, not the person. To teach and motivate for impact, we need to go deep, consider the athlete on a deeper level. We need to get in tune with ourselves…and our athletes.
Sneak Peek - from FAI:
Chapter 2 - I Hear You!
Higher-Mind Thinking
& The Human Calculation
When you intentionally get in tune with your-self, your thoughts and words, you are using Higher-mind Thinking. To attain a level of excellence, the process demands incredible commitment, technical vigilance, and reflection on the Human Calculation . Human Calculation in sport is applying an introspective view of the athlete’s ability to perform, but only after time observing, and observing closely, and asking yourself important questions, like:

•   How hard can I push them?
•   Is fifteen more minutes of conditioning likely to build their strength or give them doubts?
•   Do they need a mental rest, a light day, to come back more motivated?

The relationship and training dynamic begin to change as we get in tune. As you apply new intentions, you will look deeply into each athlete as a complex person and inspire greatness.

Go Inward
Focus on inner experiences. Go inward and you will nurture a safe, confident feeling, while being highly productive.

Emotional awareness is the ability to identify feelings; this is a foundation for emotional intelligence.

Emotional intelligence is understanding a) why you’re having certain feelings, and b) managing your emotions in a mature and thoughtful manner.

Self-awareness is the ability to a) know what you’re doing as you do it, and b) understand why you’re doing it.

Empathy is recognizing, caring for, and acknowledging the feelings of others.

As you and your athletes become aware of thoughts and feelings, critical or kind, positive or negative, you will both develop the ability to choose. I ask athletes, “What do you want?” As they hear that ques-tion, they get to think and decide. Instead of feeling confused or out of control, they become still, thoughtful, and process their desires. When they feel in control, they are connected to their desire, and we are focused and inspired together.
