Last week we shared how coaching can help students build habits that help them become the employee who can show up, learn, and persist – and avoid becoming part of the troubling statistic about Gen Z hirees being let go within their first year. This week, we continue the focus on career preparation. Strada Education has shared a new report that shows the value of targeted coaching in helping students transition successfully and sustainably from college to the workplace. This report, entitled Quality Coaching: Helping Students Navigate the Journey from College to Career, cites three features of this type of coaching that have the most significant impact according to their research:
-
Personalized help to tailor their educational plan toward career plans
-
Learning information about interests, related careers and career paths, and job details early in the educational experience
-
Support through the establishment and pursuit of goals related to learning and career, and for confronting any barriers
Looking at these three factors, one can see how well they translate to academic coaching more broadly. Coaching is personalized. Coaching solicits self-knowledge regarding interests, passions, and what would give a student a sense of purpose in a career. Coaching provides support through a variety of goal-setting processes and helps students confront, challenge, and navigate a wide variety of barriers that come into play.
Coaches, look toward these proven characteristics for a way to evaluate your work this week with each student. Ask yourself:
- How is my approach personalized to this student?
- How timely is the conversation about how their interests may drive choice of related coursework and majors?
- How am I helping the student to identify and map out goal setting processes and pinpoint and break through barriers?
Know that with each connection with a student, you are increasing the odds that they will get what they need out of college and translate it into more sustainable employment.
