As this recent article in News Nation reports, this year's job market is the toughest for recent college graduates in several years, with unemployment for that demographic currently at 5.8%, the highest the country has seen since 2021, and a number that outpaces unemployment for more established workers. This is sobering news for college grads, many of whom have spent significant time and energy earning the degree and are entering the job market under the weight of significant student loan debt. One key factor cited is companies becoming risk-averse in the face of economic and political uncertainty, a factor that lies beyond the control of any individual job seeker. 

It takes more than just passing coursework for a student to be able to survive in the modern workplace. The areas of development driven by a coaching relationship — autonomy, accountability, self-management, problem solving, pivoting flexibly, shifting perspective, learning from errors and setbacks, and much more — are what a prospective employee needs to weather the twists and turns of both the job search and the ins and outs of employment. Importantly, coaches don't direct students' choices; rather, they facilitate students' learning these skills and actions themselves, so that students can internalize the tools and take them along for life.
